Yesterday (5-Dec-2010) a friend and I stumbled upon a book signing by Lisa Dahl at Napa Style in Los Gatos, California. At first we ignored the request by the store manager to take a look at her cookbook. However, we could not ignore Lisa Dahl's delightful, elegant, inspiring, and friendly manner. She was totally engaging and before long we were tasting two of her recipe samples. Both recipes were extraordinary and once we began thumbing through her cookbook we were hooked. The book exemplifies passion and is a creation of beauty. The enticing recipes are perfectly placed among beautiful scenic photographs of Tuscany and Sedona -a glorious combination. The Exilir Of Life is a work of art, delightful to read, entertaining, and a great conversation piece. Needless to say, the cookbooks we enthusiastically bought were graciously and thoughtfully signed by Lisa Dahl.

My wife and I have had the good fortune to eat at both of Lisa Dahl's wonderful restaurants in Sedona, AZ. When we had the opportunity to see her new book "The Elixir Of Life", we could not
stop raving about the content and the incredible quality of the photography and overall publication.
This book is a must for anyone who enjoys food, cooking, or just wants to look at the fabulous
pictures and read an amazing story. This book is a masterpiece and incredibly beautiful.

Beautiful photography combines with an engaging text in Lisa Dahl's first book. The founder of two award-winning restaurants in Sedona, Arizona, Dahl as a chef writes with joy about her various recipes. Whether you are looking for appetizers, soups, salads, salsa or side dishes, you will gain valuable recipes and zeal for cooking in the pages of this book.

Each of the photos is crisp and well-designed to illustrate the dish or Dahl's travel experiences in Italy and Sedona. I love what she write in the introduction, "To do what we love most for a living is the ultimate gift because each day it gives us a better understanding of the world and ourselves. For me, one of the elixirs of life is cooking." (Page 14)

That joy radiates throughout this book. Whether you keep it on your coffee table or in the kitchen for inspiration, you will enjoy THE ELIXIR OF LIFE. In addition, this title includes a 22-minute DVD which combines beautiful music with the stirring pictures from this book. If you love food and life, you need this book. I recommend it.

Lisa Dahl has created a celebration of all of the senses in this wonderful book. She is both sensual and spiritual in her approach to beauty, food, joy and well being. Rather than calling this a cookbook let us think of it as a recipe for zestful living book, because that is what it is.
We enter her world through a poignant dedication. We leave it temporarily on the last page in a state of wonderment at her ability to put her passion onto the printed page. To call the recipes inspired is such a weak terminology, but it will have to suffice.
If you are looking for umami in your menu you need search no further. If you are looking for ornamentation ideas, this is your book, too. And if you want inspiration, Lisa is your source.

I purchased The Elixir of Life shortly after it was published and read it like a book, not just a cookbook. I wanted to savor the gorgeous photography and read Lisa's words that created such a delectable treat. The recipes are easy to follow and so delicious. This is a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys travel, cooking, eating, romance...and especially Italy. I guess that would include almost every one on our lists! Trust me, you will love this book.

I've eaten at Dahl and Di Luca in a Sedona 4 or 5 times; in fact, we ate there last night. While last night's meal wasn't as spectacular or memorable as the others, it may have been an off-night, and it is still one of my top 5 restaurants,

I ordered this book before we drove over to Sedona (5 hours from Albuquerque) and it was waiting for me when we returned.

Flipping through the book, it is very appealing, visually. There are beautiful photos, not just of the food, but of Sedona, the restaurant, and even Italy. There is a photo to accompany each recipe. Rather than just listing ingredients and instructions, some recipes include strategies and tips for perfecting the dish.

There are recipes here for dishes you are probably familiar with (mozzarella caprese, pomodoro sauce, and bruschetta, for example). But this book includes a lot of recipes you won't find in most other books on Italian cooking (at least I haven't). This includes such yummy numbers as stuffed onions, farro salad, porcini mushroom soup, cauliflower curry bisque, spinach lemon pesto soup, olive pecan spread, portobellos stuffed with spinach and goat cheese (yum!) .....

Anyhow, this is a tidy and appealing book, with approximately 50 recipes in the standard categories (starters, soups, salads, sauces, and side dishes). I have over 30 Italian cookbooks, and this one certainly has the most visual appeal. As noted, there are also several recipes that are new and innovative. Even if you don't cook, the photos in this book---gardens, Italian shops, rustic homes, wine, and of course, the food---are worth the purchase alone.
