The Elixir and the Stone is a dry but at times interesting foray into the history of the alchemists and Rosicrucians. The first half of the book is reliable and a quick read. For those with an esoteric mindset however, the second half can be safely ignored.

This book is a good complement to (and less intimidating read than) AE Waite's treatment of these subjects, which are authoritative yet verbose. For those interested in the subject, I would follow up with Waite's "Lives of the Alchemystical Philosophers".

I enjoyed the author's depiction of Hermetism. Found the section on literature and the arts a bit too long and I would personally have preferred more on Hermetism, but that is just a matter of personal preference. The book is certainly well-written and thought out.

This is an excellent book, so well researched and written. Scholarly material. It's a classic book that one would want to keep.
