Academy Street by Mary Costello
Academy Street by Mary Costello
The story of Tess Lohan—the kind of woman who we fail to notice every day: A quiet woman, who nonetheless feels things acutely—a woman with tumultuous emotions and few people to share them with. Academy Street is driven by this same urgency. In sentence after sentence it captures the rhythm and intensity of inner life. Learn more | See related books

Burger has a way of weaving details, situations, and circumstances.

Once I started to read the story I kept wanting to see where the characters would be taken.
Janice E Bowen
The mix of humor, realism, sorrow, and general wackiness gave it some interesting twists.

What a great read!! The Emerson Gospel is an intriguing, emotional and hilarious look at a slightly dysfunctional family. Burger's writing is quick paced but vivid enough to allow the reader to see the characters. Whether you are reading about Haley's adventures at her trading desk in New York or the always comical family get togethers, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommed it and can't wait to read her next book.

The Emerson Gospel is an excellent read full of wit, humor, characters you'll care about, and interesting real life ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies, that engage and entertain.

Without providing any spoilers, the book offers a great story about family, lifestyles, character, morality, balance, and the interactions our personal decisions and outside circumstances can play in most of our lives.

If I get it's point (other than entertaining), while none of us are perfect, we've all had challenges either relating to our own flaws or external events, we are all in this together, and have the opportunity to redeem ourselves and overcome.

Ok, I admit it, I have long worked in treatment setting--and so i can be quite opinioned about this genre as so often they are off the mark. Not so with The Emerson Gospel! The writer truly captures the flavor and dynamics of the family and individuals, especially how they related and "mis-relate.". Ms. Burger captures dialog so real, I could swear it was a conversation overheard. One of the best books I have read--hard to put down, and one not to be forgotten.
