Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The first volume of THE EMIGRANTS trilogy has all the crime, action, suspense and romance of the best-selling novel tempered with the realism of the true story of the stoicism of the lower classes making up most of the emigrants - and the foundation of the colonies.

Nearly half the English-speaking world is directly related to the greatest diaspora in recent history. The reality is that they are the result of the new start in life that their forebears sought and for which they suffered.

My own forebears -- and likely yours -- were one such emigrant family.
This is their story.

From the Inside Flap

It was not really a choice - starve, emigrate or be transported!

Face death by drowning, disease or fire.
Steal a loaf of bread and hang or be transported to the same colonies anyway... but in chains.

More About the Author

J.J. Barrie, Australian born author and novelist, retired to concentrate on a love of historical crime. Now writing fulltime, his debut crime novel was published in 2009. A second novel and a children's picture book were both published the following year with a historical novel introduced Paul Davaine and the Ladybird, Europe's finest jewel thief, in an intriguing robbery of the Mona Lisa. A sequel is being planned.

His abiding interest over decades in English history continues. His particular interest around in the 1850's has resulted in The Emigrants. The first volume of the trilogy - The Brothers Five - was published in both print and eBook formats in 2011. The second volume - Gold & Glory- is planned for publication in 2012 with the final volume - The Sisters Three - in 2014.

Extensively travelled, with a close knowledge of much of Europe and Asia, the stories have a particular affinity with their locales reflected in several historical thrillers in work in progress, notably Curse of the Diamonds currently being edited and The Shelford's of Shelford, for completion later in 2013 - set in England.

It reads like a first or second draft, with spelling and grammatical errors, unfinished sentences etc. The narrative is also quite difficult to follow, as it jumps around from character to character, through different locations and times. Very disappointing.
