Book Description

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

The Emperor's Edge is approximately 105,000 words.

"...A believable and lively world filled with even more lively, engaging characters. The style is very distinct with a genuinely witty, dynamic prose that is very easy to read" --SFBook.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Action, mystery, and romance December 28, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Emperor's Edge is a unique blend of steampunk and warrior caste fantasy with a dash of feminism. Amaranthe is one of the first women allowed in the Emperor's guard, and is eager to prove she has what it takes. But a chance meeting with the young emperor also draws the attention of the head of the guard, who sets her an impossible task in exchange for promotion--kill the world renowned assassin, Sicarius. Her attempt fails, but not before she realizes the task was meant to be impossible, and part of a bigger threat to the empire. Now Amaranthe is on the run, with a price on her head, and she turns to the one man who might be able to help--the assassin who spared her life. Backed with a motley crew of misfits, Amaranthe seeks to find out the truth and clear her name.

With tight, clean writing, crackling dialog and a lot of spunk, Buroker's tale is fun, fast-moving and engrossing. The characters are well-drawn, the world intriguing. With a hint of magic and romance, The Emperor's Edge is an entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great work by Lindsay Buroker February 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Emperor's Edge is an amazing read. I had trouble putting it down and finished it in two sittings. I think what really raises her above is the life she brings to her characters. I truly enjoy all of them.

The Emperor's Edge tells the story of a dedicated enforcer (police) whose dream is to become the highest ranking woman in the organization. Things never really work out the way they should though and she ends up a fugitive running from her former comrades still trying to protect her emperor. You would never expect an alcoholic professor, a gang member with magical talent, a male escort, and the deadliest assassin in the world to team up for anything, but that is what happens and it has amazing results. The book has some very humorous spots and is filled with action. I am amazed with Lindsay's ability with dialogue this is the second book of hers I have read (Goblin Brothers being the other) and the way the characters interact is an absolute joy.

If you enjoy fantasy novels do yourself a favor and check this book out. It is well worth the cost and hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of this crew.

4.0 out of 5 stars refreshingly good March 4, 2012

I picked up this book because it was a free Kindle download. I get a fair amount of my reading material this way, so I've adjusted my expectations downward; there's a lot of mediocre writing and abysmal editing on the freebies list. So when I began reading The Emperor's Edge, I was very happily surprised to find a well-written story, with minimal editorial issues and characters I enjoyed getting to know. The heroine is clever and good-natured, the hero, though morally ambiguous in some ways, is intelligent and masterful at his craft, and the secondary characters are either fun, believable, or sympathetic. I found the plot engaging, the pacing rapid but measured (no cycle of zooming and slogging) and I was engaged by the conflict and invested in the outcome.
For those of you who are particular about it, there was no bad language; although there are scenes of physical violence, and some of them are gory, there was, in my opinion, no descent into nauseating detail. (I can't tell you how quickly I delete the books where the author lingers pruriently over every horrific aspect.) Also, there were no sex scenes, though it's clear that a deepening of the relationship lies ahead for the hero and heroine in future books. Personally, I found their chemistry to be far more believable and tantalizing than any amount of instant lust or "fated from the first glance" bosom-heaving.
Perhaps one of the things I liked most is that the characters, even the heroine, are fallible, but able to acknowledge their short-comings. One of the reasons I read, instead of watching television, is the mean-spiritedness, immaturity, and shallow criticism becoming so prevalent, not just on gossip-oriented programs, but from supposedly detached network newscasters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Lively, and Interesting January 24, 2012

This is what fantasy escapism should be: a lively and intriguing plot, characters who fascinate, inspire and entertain, and a well thought out secondary world. This book is the best advertisement for the following ones that could possibly exist - I'm buying them right now. Well done, Ms. Buroker!

3.0 out of 5 stars Inadvertently funny October 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story is full of stereotypes, but it's not really bad. Unfortunately the author needs a dictionary. Words are used in such extremely odd ways here that my reading was frequently interrupted with long pauses spent trying to figure out what she imagined a given word meant. Or in some cases, what word she had simply misspelled (as when she used "gentile" to mean "genteel" ... which wasn't quite what she meant anyway). In too many places it's clear she has read a word, determined its meaning from context, and been just wrong enough to make her subsequent use of it silly. I find this sort of thing extremely distracting, but I can easily imagine many readers untroubled by it. Overall I'd say this is on the level of good fanfic, and as such very likely pleasurable to many.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ready for a sequel the moment it was over January 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I tremendously enjoyed The Emperor' Edge!
I stumbled across the book while browsing amd expected an okay read for the low price.
Finding myself reading it in a little over 24 hours, often chuckeling and once or twice snorting out loud, and feeling myself enarmored with the team of misfits - that was a pleasant surprise!
