Hermynia zur Muehlen's beautifully written memoir of her childhood in the "well tempered glass-house" of an Austrian aristocratic family, her coming of age and struggle for independence in the years before World War I, her passionate commitment to social justice, is a fascinating personal portrait as well as the captivating reminiscence of a vanished world. Lionel Gossman has given us an elegant translation from the original German, and his extensive appendix on persons and events is a welcome guide to middle European cultural and political history of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century.
