Editorial Reviews

This work by biblical scholar Mark Hitchcock is highly recommended to anyone interested in understanding the meaning of the prophetic Scriptures. (J. Dwight Pentecost, distinguished professor of Bible exposition (emeritus) at Dallas Theological Seminary)|Mark Hitchcock is one of the foremost experts on the topic of Bible prophecy today. I love his writing because it is both biblical and very practical. Mark takes the complex and makes it understandable. Mark Hitchcock is someone who can help you study and understand the prophetic events of Scripture and then know what to do as we await the Lord’s return. I highly recommend his new book to you. (Greg Laurie, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship and evangelist with Harvest Crusades)|A clear, comprehensive, Bible-based panorama of future events. Beginners and PhDs will learn from this book and appreciate more the wisdom and power of our Lord. (Charles C. Ryrie, author of The Ryrie Study Bible)

From the Back Cover

A Comprehensive Guide to Bible Prophecy and the End of Days
What are the events, the characters, and the prophecies that will bring world history to its predicted climax? Will we be wise enough to see it coming? Will we be ready?

Bible prophecy is filled with numerous interpretations and positions, but that shouldn’t become a reason to ignore the prophecies presented in Scripture. These verses deserve our attention just as much as―or more than―other Scripture passages.

Mark Hitchcock, author of more than twenty books on end times Bible prophecy, has created the definitive resource that will answer all of your questions about the end times.

More About the Author

Attorney Mark Hitchcock thought his career was set after graduating from law school in 1984 and getting a job working with a judge at the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. But after what Mark calls a "clear call to full-time ministry," he changed course and went to Dallas Theological Seminary, completing a masters degree in 1991 and a doctoral degree in 2006. Since 1991 Mark has served as senior pastor of Faith Bible Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. He has authored 15 books related to end-time Bible prophecy and was the contributing editor for the Internet-based Left Behind Prophecy Club for four years. Mark and his wife, Cheryl, live in Edmond with their two sons, Justin and Samuel.

This 500-page volume is an overview of Bible prophecy for the twenty-first century reader. Hitchcock discloses his own views at the beginning of the book, so the reader knows what to expect. After explaining why prophecy is so important (27% of the Bible is prophecy), he then covers opposing views as well as his own. Hitchcock makes the case for his futuristic, pre-millennial, pre-tribulation rapture interpretation, citing Scripture and rebutting other views with a combination of humility and scholarship.

Dr. Hitchcock wants the reader to understand why he holds his views, so the book includes an introduction to sound hermeneutics. He explains principles of biblical interpretation while applying them to three key passages in prophecy: Daniel, the Olivet Discourse, and the Revelation. He reveals patterns and sequences in these passages that give a chronology of the end times.

Short, meaty chapters address signs of the times, the Rapture, the Tribulation, the Millennium, the Judgments and Heaven/Hell. This book does not disappoint. As the cover says, it is "A Complete Overview of Bible Prophecy and the End of Days." The appendices include recommendations for further reading and plenty of notes.

I recommend this as a great resource for serious laity and for beginning college students in Christian Studies programs. Hitchcock's writing is clear and complete. He covers deep subjects without overwhelming the reader with "seminary speak." My one small gripe was his use of the New Living Translation, which is a bit too casual in tone for my taste, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of this enlightening book.

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

How do you tackle such a huge subject as Bible prophecy as well as the End of Days? When you look at books on these topics or others, where do you begin reading or looking? What is the final authority as you read and come across a statement of faith that may or may not line up with your own? As a person made in the image of God, do you have a particular stance about End Times or is your stance based on a particular denominational stance?
When I was preparing to write this review, these were questions I asked myself too. The first pages I turned to in this book were the ones at the end, Appendix 2: Recommended Books for Further Study. Why start there? Actually, you can learn a lot about an author by seeing the books, authors, teachers, and studies that are listed by the author. You can learn if there is a sole approach to the topic or if it includes a variety of sources from various backgrounds and denominations. Mark Hitchcock does list quite a few and he also helps his readers by putting the sources under topic headings.
Next, I looked at the Context page. There I saw where Mark took on a host of topics, breaking them down into 14 parts and each had subtopics underneath. Before one begins reading his overview, there is a section called Preface, which is really short, one page to be exact. The next one I had to applaud the author for including before dealing with the many topics he writes about is a section he titles "Introduction: Something We Can All Agree On." Here, with humor and honesty, the author shares his heart. I can say it is one that seeks to bring God glory and definitely not one that seeks to divide the Body of Christ. Both of these I respect as well as agree with. There are a few things that are quite clear in Scripture; the rest is open to discussion.

The End - A Complete Overview of Bible Prophecy and the End of Days by Mark Hitchcock is the most well researched, well written book on Bible Prophecy I have ever seen. This massive 504 page volume, complete with multiple charts, lists, and clear discussion of the numerous interpretations of the end times in light of a thorough exposition of the scriptures, is simply amazing.

If you are looking for clear explanations, this reference volume provides a solid biblical foundation on complex (and often confusing) terms and timelines.

Why take the time to study prophesy? Because God promises a special blessing on those who study prophesy and pay attention to what it says. Revelation 1:3 explains, "God blesses the one who reads the words of the prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says for the time is near."

More than straight prophesy, Mark Hitchcock urges readers to Get Ready for the Big Day, the Marriage Supper - one day God will say, "Go son and get your bride and bring her home." We need to be ready. Preparing for this ceremony is more than just saying a quick salvation prayer....Revelation 19:8 reminds us that every believer will be dressed in the finest white linens which represent the righteous deeds we have done. The good deeds are not your salvation - but like the book says on page 230, "Has it ever occurred to you that at the marriage of the bride to the Lamb each of us will be wearing the wedding garments of our own making?" How we are dressed depends upon the life we live for Christ now.

I received this book through Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for an honest review. I have to say I highly recommend this book. Purchase it as a reference, a companion to your bible studies, but at the same time enjoy the story. Greatest story ever told and we are a part of it.
