young English magazine struggles to survive,
By Lynda Paulo (Great Neck, New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The English Home (Magazine)
This reaqder is a true Anglophile and wants this new, year old magazine to survive. Judging from the amount of advertizing it receives, I'm not sure that it will. Each edition brings decorating features, some English recipies, homes for sale, and descriptions of all manner of things English. Written for North American readers, it is a delight.

Visual Feast,

I expected the magazine to be full of old world cottages and castles, and although these do feature, it is also packed full of lovely photography showing ideas for all styles of homes. Light, airy interiors - both historical and contemporary, international shopping ideas and English travel.

I am so enjoying English Home Magazine, well written articles and food section. Being a Brit living in America, its wonderful to travel back through the pages. To follow someone re buidling a cottage to make it theirs. Reading what its like to be a caretaker of a castle and actually living in it.
I am reading it from Page to page and enjoying all the wonderful photos.

This magazine is SO worth the wait to have it shipped to the US. The imagery is lovely and provides great references for garden and architectural subject matter.

I bought this a few times at Barnes and Noble then I decided to bite the bullet and order a subscription. I am SO glad that I did. It is a wonderful magazine. The kind you want to sit down with a cup of tea or coffee and put your feet up and lose yourself in the pages.

This is truly an unexpected Gem. I found wonderful ideas on how to decorate my home from this magazine. Really reminds you that a home is more than four walls and lot of stuff.

I like magazines that take you to places that you would love to see but maybe never will. I still plan on visiting Great Britain one day, but in the meantime, I can daydream through these pages. The English Home is printed in England and is filled with page after page of beautiful homes and gardens, decorating ideas, recipes, antiques, and helpful information on where to buy what you see. Everything is totally British in style and design and therefore not what you would find in magazines or in stores here in the United States. This is not your average "country home" decor, though they do feature homes in the Cotswolds. This is more classic, upscale, befitting a small (or large) castle. There is a section that features homes for sale in England and gives you a glimpse of some unique properties and selling prices. Kind of nice to dream! My favorite article of each issue is "The Guardians of (name of estate)" in which they feature a different large "house" which is actually what we would refer to as a castle. They tell about the home's history, show pictures of the interior, and tell about the family that now owns and lives in it and acts as the caretaker of such a historical place. I find this fascinating, because it puts a more personal light on homes that we rarely get to see. I would have given this magazine 5 stars if the balance between advertisements and articles had weighed a little heavier on the article side. I understand that it takes a lot more advertising to put together such a nice magazine with so many beautiful pictures and to ship it to the United States. But I would still like to see more articles and less advertising. In spite of that, it is still well worth the subscription price and a real joy to read. |
