Editorial Reviews

Brighton,UK4-piece Metronomy are slated to deliver their latest, The English Riviera, to stateside audiences April19th on BecauseMusic/Big Beat/Atlantic. Their most polished effort to date, The English Riviera is an ambitious attempt to navigate the tidal swells of love and life, abjectly melancholic and passionate, celebratory of it's outstanding potential to evoke polarizing feelings simultaneously. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist Joseph Mount, Metronomy's 2008 sophomore effort, Nights Out, appropriately demonstrated a subdued, adolescent after-hours wonderment. The album wore its heart on its sleeve and lipstick on its collar, characterized by deviant intrigue that placed the record amongst the more critically acclaimed English dance albums of the late 2000s. The English Riviera, the band's third proper full length, is marked by a notable lean toward late-nineties indie-pop aesthetics, incorporating a diverse array of percussive and melodic elements. Anchored by the lead single "TheLook" (which saw remixes fromred Falke, Moonlight Matters, Ghostpoet, and King Krule), the album seldom strays from deliberately danceable yet contemplative arrangements. Combined with the withdrawn harmonies of members Anna Prior, Oscar Cash, and Gbenga Adelkan, the result is a personal yet wholly involved group effort, isolated while amongst one another, each member a wayward sailboat on a glassy sea.

One of my favourite albums by far.

It keeps adding layers of sounds and vocal harmonies to a catchy organ riff.

The English Riviera is the newest album from British eclectic electronic music group, Metronomy. I am a recent fan of their stuff, having followed youtube 'related' videos around one day until happening upon their video for 'A Thing for Me'. The release of this addition to my Metronomy collection was highly anticipated and rather than being disappointed, as I half expected from the hype I had assigned it in my head, I was completely blown away.

Taken together, Mount takes the listener on a journey through more than an album. Each song is another step down a path: a solid mix of sentimentality, rhythm, and fun. This album has it all. It stretches the bounds of normal just enough to still be mostly mainstream and appealing to the ears of the masses, but also push those ears just a bit more to enjoy some notes, rhythms, and melodies that they wouldn't normally accept so readily. It's ear-expanding music (this is a terrible phrase and I'm ashamed that I've said it).

At any rate, I could not be more into Metronomy and I look forward to seeing how they evolve. For now I'll be listening to The English Riviera on repeat and thanking god I'm an ocean away from Mr. Mount or I'd be up one restraining order.

Joseph Mount lynchpin behind Metronomy comes from Devon & presents that area as an "English" Riviera, a romantic destination where magic happens. The sound of seagulls opens & tracks build up through to 4th number 'The Look' which is brilliant (also a fab video)...melodic & original. 'She Wants' trundles along & keeps the mood going whilst the gentle 'Trouble' favours some light guitar before bouncing into life. 'The Bay' with its brill oriental start is perhaps referring to the Torquay coastal area but could apply to where ever you are at the time..."cause this isn't Paris, and this isn't London, & it's not Berlin, & it's not Hong Kong, not Tokyo". The album is a form of futuristic electronica indie pop though seems inspired by the sounds of the 60's in terms of melody & could imagine as a backdrop for 'Dr Who' or 'The Avengers'. The haunting 'Loving Arm' with some simplistic shifts creates a mood for the coast & cliffs. 'Corinne' along with tasty female vocals & fine ideas creates a beautiful soundscape. As with all forms of genius there are parts that irritate like 'Some Written' but probably they had to do this to get through to the other side. 'Love Underlined' hypnotically rises through several counter rhythms coming together into a finale & is another slab of brilliance. This album has across the board appeal & though not the album of 2011 (that goes to The Jezabels 'Prisoner') it comes close.

Wasn't sure if I would like all their songs just from hearing The Look on satellite radio, but decided to purchase music after some YouTube research. Totally impressed with the entire album English Riviera and the vocals and vibe. Everyone I have shared it with is in love with it...

Heard track 4, The Look, at the end of a movie and enjoyed it quite a bit so picked up the CD. I find 4 tracks on the CD genuinely listenable, specifically 3, 4, 7, and 9. The rest of the album isn't bad at all but not what I wanted it to be. We all know music is very subjective and this is worth a listen. Trust me. I do wish they would have used the female vocalist more but I think that's because I have a penchant for female leads (Ivy, Bitter:Sweet, Fiona Apple, The Bird and the Bee, the list goes on and on and on).

I love this record. It was recommended by my boyfriend Josh Homme on the Nerdist podcast. I love Josh Homme and would let him lead me into musical battle. He's my Braveheart. I plan on getting their other records because Josh Homme has a wonderful face to sit upon. Did I say that outloud?

The album sounds disjointed - as if it were recorded in different places or under various producers. However, the music is excellent. If this was done on purpose, then BRAVO! If not, BRAVO anyway! I was attracted by the song "Corrinne" but played by a cover band in a video I saw in You Tube. I liked the song so much I searched out the original, and after listening to the entire album online, I bought it. Long story short: the album never came so I ended up trading some crap CDs for store credit in a used CD/LP place in the city where I live and traded it for a vinyl copy of this album. Not one single dud track in the entire record. Given the sad state of music today, this is a significant achievement. So, support indie bands! And boycott Kanye West.

Although I don't love this sound as much as I was promised I would, I do think this is a quality music product.
