About the Author

Austin Grossman is the author of SOON I WILL BE INVINCIBLE, a novel, published in 2007 by Pantheon Books. His writing has also appeared in Granta, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. His second novel, YOU, will be published by Mulholland Books in 2012.

He has also worked on critically acclaimed video games including Ultima Underworld II, System Shock, and Epic Mickey.

More About the Author

Austin Grossman is a game designer, game writer, and novelist.

After graduating from Harvard in 1992, he failed to get a job in publishing and found a job at a small computer game company, Looking Glass Studios, which was already become a legendary center of talent and innovation in the gaming world. Grossman went on to write and design for games such as Ultima Underworld 2, System Shock, Jurassic Park: Trespasser, Deus Ex, Disney's Epic Mickey, and most recently, Dishonored.

Along the way, Grossman also earned a Master's in Performance Studies at NYU, and is currently ABD at the University of California, Berkeley, in English Literature.

In 2007 he published his first novel, Soon I Will Be Invincible, a hilarious, literary psychologically acute take on the superhero genre in the vein Alan Moore's Watchmen, which the New York Times called "Imaginative and, at times, achingly real." Was nominated for the Center for Fiction's John Sargent, Sr. First Novel Prize.

His second novel, YOU, is another literary take on a genre - a mystery that takes you inside the world of video games and profesional game development - the Boston Globe calls it "a razor-sharp comedy" and Harper's Magazine writes, "Some of the most startling, acute writing on video games yet essayed."

Regardless of how you feel about the game, you can't deny that Epic Mickey had incredible art direction and the concept art that was released months before it came out looked incredible. Images of twisted robots, Disney lands ravaged, and a just plain dim outlook for the world had a lot of people interested. How the heck did this stuff get passed by Disney? Well, it turned out that a lot of it didn't make the final cut, or what did got toned down big time. I spent the extra money and got the collector's edition of the game, mainly for the figure it came with, but also because some of the artwork was featured on the making-of dvd. While it had some great work, it made me want a real art book. Well, we finally got it long after the game came out, and after a few delays, the book doesn't disappoint. This is one of the best art books I've seen all year, and any Disney fan needs to have this in their collection. This book almost makes up for the disaster that the game ended up being.

All of the artwork that was shown prior to the game's release date is featured here. Those creepy images of animatronic Goofy are here, as are the awesome black and white drawings of different robots. But that's just a small sample of what That Art of Epic Mickey has. There are tons of lush, gorgeous digital pieces that should hush anyone who says that traditional hand drawn artwork will always be the best (as if The Art of Kung Fu Panda didn't put that to rest enough). Characters, locations, important story points, everything in the game is covered here. I loved seeing some of Pete's appearances get showcased here, though it made me want more since the character sections were brief, and I've always enjoyed these portions the most in art books.

I thought the book was fantastic and offered the ability to see many concepts that didn't make it into the game.
