Editorial Reviews

Review

“If you are a patient who has had or is about to have a Cesarean delivery, this comprehensive book will explain it all for you in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.” —William Camann, M.D., director of obstetric anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School

"A most excellent, comprehensive source for just about any aspect of anticipating or recovering from Cesarean birth. It’s almost as good as having an experienced girlfriend in the hospital bed next to you. Take all the hospital days your insurance will give you, rest, nurse your baby and read this book.” —Peg Moline, Fit Pregnancy

From the Inside Flap

Childbirth is a life-altering experience for any woman, but a Cesarean delivery can be overwhelming, whether it?s unexpected or planned. Despite the fact that roughly one in four babies in the United States is delivered by c-section, very little information about the experience is included in typical pregnancy books and physicians and childbirth educators often gloss over the details. The Essential C-Section Guide is written not only for women to read in preparation for a scheduled c-section and for those considered ?high risk? who know that a c-section may become necessary but also for women recovering from an unexpected surgical delivery. This book provides answers to important questions about what the surgery entails, what a woman can expect as she recovers, and what considerations should be made for future pregnancies and deliveries. With frank discussions about the physical and emotional aspects surrounding a c-section, the authors share comforting wisdom about early bonding, pain control, breastfeeding, infant care, healing from surgery, postpartum exercise, partner involvement, and much more, in detail not available anywhere else.Written by authors who have firsthand knowledge of birth by c-section, The Essential C-Section Guide is well-researched and addresses its unique concerns with intelligence and compassion.

I had a planned c-section and found this book to be very helpful, especially the exercize plan for recovery. The book provides a nice description of the proceedure, but it is the chapters on emotional impacts of c-section and information for your partner really set it apart. It is nice that the book covers both planned and unplanned c-sections. It is nice that the authors provide warnings before content that may be upsetting so that you can decide whether or not to read that section. I have recommended the book to several friends and they all said that the book helped them with their recoveries as well.

My first baby was born after an emergency c-section -- I had "planned" on a natural childbirth! I was so unprepared for the experience that it took me months to get over it. With my second one, the c-section was planned so I wanted to know what to expect. I couldn't find a book out there and my pregnancy books barely covered the topic.
Now I'm pregnant with my third and know I'll be having another c-section so I am thrilled that there is finally a book to help me. The Essential C-Section Guide is amazing -- it's so easy to read and the authors really explain everything you need to know about c-sections. I especially appreciated the information on breastfeeding and the exercise chapters are awesome. Reading a full description of the surgery also helped me make some sense of what had happened to me -- and now I know exactly what to expect.

I tend to be a person who is not satisfied with just one source of information and do extensive research on every subject that I am educating myself on. After looking at many different books and resources, I can honestly say that this is the only book that you need to prepare you for your c-section. This comprehensive reference provides thorough information while maintaining a humanistic approach to the subject matter. This book contains a whole chapter on the emotional aspects of having a cesarean which I found to be very helpful, since it is something that is not usually addressed. On top of the information included to aid you in your physical recovery there is another chapter with workout information when you are ready for that. I would have paid twice the price I did for this truly "essential" resource

Three years ago, I underwent an emergency c-section and have had emotional issues surrounding it since. Now that I've learned with this second pregnancy that I am not a candidate for an attempted vaginal birth, I decided it was high time to educate myself as much as possible.

After reading this book, not only am I feeling more prepared for the upcoming c-section but I'm also more understanding of the one I had years ago. I heartily recommend this for every woman, whether she's pregnant and planning on a vaginal birth or a mom that has had a c-section in the past.

Just few points I found very helpful:

1. This book helped me make informed decisions before, during and after c-section, with regard to medication, medical procedures, daily routine etc. For example, nurses in the hospital would offer me pain medication without explaining which medication is stronger, and pros and cons. With the help of the book I knew what to choose.

2. With a lot of helpful tips from the authors who had c-section themselves I was able to speed up the process of recovery, when compared to my previous two c-sections. I also had less pain and used weaker pain medication.

3. My husband knew exactly how to make me feel better thanks to a chapter in the book that gives very helpful hints to men.

4. If not the book I would not have known I could start workout from the very first day after delivery, starting with breathing exercises and kegels on day one and switching to light abdominal exercises on day four. Two weeks after delivery my tummy felt much smaller and stronger.

5. Managing pain: Most of the time I knew the cause of pain thanks to extensive explanations in the book. That helped me control the pain without resorting to strong medication.

There is more to this book and I recommend it to everyone who plans a c-section.

I bought the book solely for the workout chapter. I had had one c-section already and never was able to find a workout routine that didn't end up causing me pain at the incision site. This workout is gentle enough to start with, but effective in getting back your abdominal muscles. I've been doing it for 5 weeks now and my stomach is significantly flatter. I've also lost 8 pounds. I can't say much about the rest of the book because, since it was my second c-section, I didn't need to read it.

I'm sorry, but this book was full of everything that can co wrong with a c-section. As a mom who's had 3 c-sections and about to have #4 soon, this was full of what happens, but also full of every little potential thing that can go wrong. I was surprised to see that it completely left out an important surgical factor: whether your surgeon sutures all 7 abdominal layers or clumps things into only 3 layers. While the 3-layer method is faster (so doctors can squeeze in more patients and make more money), the 7 layer method is better for a quicker and generally smoother recovery, and if one wishes to try for a VBAC with future pregnancies, the 7-layer suturing heals stronger. The 3-layer method also increases chances of internal bleeding within the 12 hours following surgery. These are factoids that I've found from talking with my surgeon about the procedure. I've read much better material, such as "Strategies for the C-Section Mom" Strategies for the C-Section Mom: A Complete Fitness, Nutrition, and Lifestyle Guide, which is a MUCH better book. The attitude of that book is basically, "this is the deck of cards that you've been dealt with repeat cesareans, so here's how to make the best of it." It is not full of negatives, but has just enough surgical details for the mom to make important choices, while focusing on maximizing post-op healing.
