Editorial Reviews

Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of The Essential Dixie Chicks, the career-spanning collection of chart-topping hits, classic tracks and personal favorites selected by the all-time top-selling female group. The Dixie Chicks are one of a handful of acts with multiple albums achieving “Diamond” sales status - both Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999) hit that stratospheric landmark - and have won seven Grammy® awards. Their on-stage reputation has helped them sell over $100 million worth of concert tickets and sold out shows worldwide, and outspoken songs like “Goodbye, Earl” made it clear that this power trio played by nobody’s rules. This Essential 2-CD set includes all their biggest hits, including “Ready To Run,” “Not Ready To Make Nice” and “Landslide” and is a perfect representation of their career…so far.

Dixie Chicks
"The Essential Dixie Chicks"
(Sony Legacy, 2010)
-------------------------------------------
While the single-disc "Playlist" set which came out earlier this year is a good option for music fans on tight budgets, this 2-CD collection is a real, true, proper best-of retrospective. Like "Playlist," it's a straight-up reissue set, with tracks taken off the band's studio albums, and it doesn't offer any rarities, outtakes or live tracks. (Also, their earlier indie albums still seem lost in limbo: it would be nice to have a box set that integrates that material as well, at some point...) But if you are looking for a strong overview of their big hits (and many of their best album cuts) this gives a lot of bang for your buck. Highly recommended! After the June release of the twelve-track Playlist collection, fans were left wondering if a more complete Dixie Chicks anthology would be issued. That question is answered in the affirmative with this thirty-track 2-CD set that includes all six of the group's Country chart toppers, and fourteen (of seventeen) top-ten hits spanning all four of their studio albums on Sony imprints. That's nine years compressed into two hours over which the trio proves themselves consistently original interpreters of unerringly picked material, occasional contributors of original songs, and by the time of Taking the Long Way, writers with their own voice. The group's sound has often been imitated, but none of their followers have balanced the vocal blend, material, instrumental chops and attitude that makes this group one-of-a-kind.

Earlier female acts like Shania Twain tilted the Nashville axis towards pop, but the Dixie Chicks re-energized the Country empowerment handed down by Kitty Wells and Loretta Lynn. The trio wasn't shy of being feminine, but they always led with their music. They didn't smooth out their twang, instead highlighting their fiddle and banjo, and arraying their voices in three-party harmonies. Better yet, the more famous they became, the more they indulged their Texas roots. Rather than taking every crossover opportunity, they let the quality of their music draw more people into the tent.

I have long been a big fan of the Dixie Chicks. There isn't a song on any of their albums that I have not heard many times. Not a single song I wouldn't listen to again at the drop of a hat... In fact, you don't even need to drop the hat. These three women are possessed of beautiful voices, and they know how to harmonize them to produce the most wonderful results. Natalie Maines' strong lead voice sells each song, projects each message, each story. The tremendous, versatile musical talent and skill demonstrated by Martie Maguire Emily Robison combine with the lead singer to produce a body of work that is variably inspiring, touching, funny, sad, and in in its totality, sheer genius. It is not at all hard to see how this great trio has sold such vast numbers of albums, one so very many awards, and enjoyed tremendous concert success.

The album set includes an all too small selection from "Taking the Long Way," which is (sadly) the only new so we have seen from the trio since the well-known incident in London when Natalie foolishly spoke her mind. The shameful and un-American response to this by much of Country music, a substantial portion of Country radio, and various Conservative commentators has damaged immeasurably these three women being punished for speaking their minds. It seems there are some people who will eagerly support free speech, as long as the free speech agrees with them. Oh, sure, the other side of the political spectrum also speaks out loudly against public figures saying things they don't like. But that side has never perpetrated the kind of concerted and conspiratorial attacks... personal, physical, professional... that we have seen unleashed against the Dixie Chicks.

Not Ready To Pay Twice!
When it comes to the label releasing something in the vein of "Essential" or "Playlist," the artists usually have no input. It's almost always because the label wants to cash in on a known act that isn't coming out with new music or hasn't had a mainstream hit in quite a while... Read More
