Talk about a band that really divides fans. You can basically divide all Incubus fans into the following groups: The Pre-Make Yourself crowd, the Pre-Ben Kenney fans, the Pre-If Not Now When? fans, and the I love everything they do fans (myself included). No matter what group you're in, or if you don't know where you fall yet, this is a great collection for all fans. The other reviewer made the comment about "Monuments and Melodies" and this release being another rehash of the same old greatest hits. It partially is, partially is not. Monuments and Melodies is more like "hey, here are our most successful singles, plus a couple new songs and harder to find non-album tracks." This collection is a little bit different. There are many of the same songs, but this release is far more comprehensive because it actually contains songs from their entire career from Fungus Amongus to If Not Now When? including: all singles and B-sides plus some non-single fan favorites. This includes lesser known singles like "Agoraphobia" and "Make A Move" and delves deeper into their back catalog than Monuments did by including studio tracks from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Fungus Amongus. As a long time fan of the band and all its different phases, I'd say this is a pretty solid, balanced collection of tracks spanning their entire career. So if you find a particular set of songs you like, you can find the album they're on and go from there discovering the rest of their music. My only critiques would be to switch "Version" with "Take Me To Your Leader"(it's surprising it's not on this set because it has a music video) and add super fan-favorites "Sick Sad Little World" or "The Warmth," but besides that, this is a great collection for a beginner.Read more ›

Don't quite understand why this collection of already released Incubus material was titled "Incubus's New Album." They already released a greatest hits album a few years ago as the other review told you. False advertising. Buy it if you neglected to buy Monuments and Melodies. If you're looking for something newer, that came after If Not Now, When? then this is not at all what you're looking for.

I used to be a huge Incubus fan. For whatever reason I hadn't purchased an album since Make yourself. I was familiar with some of the later hits but not enough of it. I was out buying some music and happened to by this used, on a whim. So I bring it home and pop it in. The first disc really connected and a flood of memories came back as I listened to the older material. The songs from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. brought me back to a younger, harder, hungrier Incubus. Moving forward through Pardon Me, Stellar, Drive and a personal favorite, Warning (the drums and especially the cymbals are amazing), had me wondering why I stopped following Incubus.

So I put in the second disc and hear Meglomaniac, great song. I began doing some work around the house while listening. Then things kind of slowed down. I felt the following songs sounded flat and unimpressive. Disappointed I took the disc out and put it away. About a week later I put both discs in my car for a long ride. Disc 2 came on again and I was prepared for so-so material. Man was I wrong. Being in the car I focused and really listened to the subtleties of disc 2. What followed was an older, seasoned, confident band not afraid to change things up. This material knocked me out. In the company of Wolves, was worth the price of the of both discs alone. After listening about 10 times I have to say disc 2 has become my favorite. Anna Molly, Dig, Black Heart Inertia, great songs, better musicianship.

Some people will say the band was never the same after S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and they are right. The band is better. They as I, have gotten older, grown and added new sounds to their style. The new material is just as solid as the old. I am once again a huge Incubus fan.

This has 28 songs, no filler, all stand alone tracks.

I'll just come right out: I already have most of this band's albums (I even have Fungus Amongus - but I am still missing Morning View, among others.), but I will say this: This album is a great starting point for fans just discovering this band, as one reviewer already said. The reviewer also said this band went through "many phases" (I'm more of a pre-Make Yourself guy, but will listen to their other stuff - MINUS If Not Now, When?). You can see that their sound has underwent major changes - from the ever-present scratching and heavy styles on the S.C.I.E.N.C.E.-era songs to soft, almost ballad-like songs on If Not Now, When? Also, a couple songs from Monuments and Melodies appear on here, plus more non-album tracks that can be hard to find (this is NOT a reissue of M&M, everyone - songs from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. AND the Enjoy Incubus EP - but not Fungus Amongus - are included, making it at least a little different from the greatest hits issue - "Take Me to Your Leader" should be on here, though). So you have three choices: Either get Monuments and Melodies and get a second disc full of rare tracks, buy The Essential Incubus and get the earlier years of their music + tracks not featured in the former, or buy both if you are a hardcore fan who likes everything this band puts out. 5/5.
