About the Author

Paul J. Bailo, MBA, MSW, is the founder and CEO of Phone Interview Pro, a service for job seekers who want to perfect their telephone job interviewing skills. After recognizing that the importance of the phone interview is often overlooked, Bailo prompted Phone Interview Pro to create a 250-plus point phone evaluation, previously nonexistent in the career services industry.

Most job-finding books develop a paragraph or two, a chapter at best, to interviewing by phone. This author devotes an entire book to the subject and it is much needed. Employers are increasingly conducting phone interviews as their first contact with the job candidate and it may be the only chance to "get it right." Bailo's book, The Essential Phone Interview Handbook, is easy to read and offers practical (but sometimes little known) advice about how to ace a phone interview. Suggestions like use a landline, have caller ID, talk in sound bites and dress up for the interview all have merit and the author explains why. The preparation for a phone interview should be as extensive as it would be for a face-to-face meeting. This gem of a book will do just that.

P.S. The book has a detailed table of contents and an index so it is very easy to find specific information that you may want to quickly refer to.

So many of us these days have to get through a phone interview before we can even be considered for a face-to-face interview. Knowing how to handle the phone interview is key, but it is also an art form.

This book is a perfect guide and resource for anyone going through the job search. It provides down to earth great examples of what one should be doing to both prepare prior and to survive the phone interview itself.

With the job market being as tight as it is, any little bit of help is needed to get that edge over your competition and this book is one that I would highly recommend!

Great information, it is so worth it. Especially if you have been looking for awhile or if you are currently employed. Great to know things you do not think of or don't notice till it is pointed out. I am still looking, but I did receive a 3rd interview, unfortunately not the amount of money I wanted;so I turned it down. I am also waiting for the results of another interview; even if this one does not work out, I am quite confident I will land another interview. I will get the job I want. This book gave me loads of much needed confidence and encouragement . Great Book. Success to you fellow job hunters.

Disclosure, Paul asked me to review his next book and I offered to review this one as well.

This book is highly practical, which I really like, and gives lots of examples. I have worked with job seekers for many years, and the phone interview is the critical first step. I completely agree with Paul on the phone interview being like a first date. The job search is just like dating and marriage. You want to make a good impression during the phone interview (first date), but you will not likely ask for the job (propose marriage) during the phone interview.

Take the time to read this book thoroughly and take notes. Lots and lots of practical information.

I read several previous comments about this being dated by the Paul's insistence on not using a cell phone. Well... you should avoid using one at all cost.

Great book for any job seeker!

I bought this book thinking it would explain good and bad answers to commonly asked questions during a phone interview, but really it was all just common sense. Don't chew gum, don't burp, don't interrupt, don't talk about politics or religion. All things that most people don't need a book to tell them. There was very little about the interview itself, it was more about preparing for it. I would recommend getting a real book on interviewing as most of the information would still apply. Don't waste your money.
