What Pearl Jam did, maybe even unwittingly, was to weld the thick sludgey minor-chord sound (and general angst) of grunge to arena size rock choruses and guitar power. In doing so, they managed to quickly outshine their nearest peers (Nirvana) commercially and ultimately become the vanguard for rock through the 90's. Along with Red Hot Chili Peppers and maybe Soundgarden, they shaped the sound of a decade and thrived to see their success sustained creatively.

"The Essential Pearl Jam" (a repackaging of Rearviewmirror, as reflected in the title) reflects (har har) that 12 years between Ten and Binaural in solid fashion, even if does lean heavily on the first three albums. It also offers a dozen later track to show that, even while the band's spotlight had faded somewhat, albums like No Code were better even while the band purposely was making music that antagonized fans expecting more of "Jeremy." Treats like "Do The Evolution" and "Man Of The Hour" sound just as powerful as any of the pre-Vs. material.

And for those who argue that Eddie Vedder is a big old sourpuss, they miss out on fun stuff like the tribute to old 45's "Spin The Black Circle" or the totally unironic cover of "Last Kiss" (that actually hit the top ten in 1999). Guitarist Stone Gossard rips some particularly innovative riffs through the proceedings here, and it's worth noting that Goassard (as well as the rest of the band) usually co-wrote the band's songs. On "Rearviewmirror," they are divided into two CD's, with an "Up" disc of rockers and the "Down" side of more pensive or acoustic material.

It is the second disc where more of the interesting material lies for me.

At first, I was hesitant to get it since I had most of the songs on there from Pearl Jam's previous studio albums. And I didn't understand why they just put all the songs in chronological order and spread it across two discs. But now I see that they have an "Up Side" disc 1 which features more of Pearl Jam's rocking and faster tunes and a "Down Side" disc 2 which features slower, more mellow songs so you can get Pearl Jam on both moods. Sometimes you want to rock out and sometimes you want to chill. This collection of Pearl Jam does that. My only complaint is that it is missing such good songs as "Release" from the Ten album and "In Hiding" from the Yield album, but otherwise it is awesome. Plus I love the digipak that includes an actual mirror on the front and inside covers and a nice booklet featuring band photos in the studio. I dig it. Definitely worth it!

This was my second purchase of this cd. I am giving my first to my nephew who started my PJ experience many years ago. Most folks do not like what are greatest hits collections. The Essential/RVM is not that. RVM is a showcase of the wide range of music that this masterful group of musicians have given to us. The order in which the music is presented shows that the group themselves developed this to be listened to in a sequence that they felt best represented their work. An amazing amount of listening pleasure for the price. To be enjoyed by both the casual fan and those of us who thrive on the sound.
