5.0 out of 5 stars Ancient Egyptian Ambient Electro Space Rock, August 2, 2002
By
Terry Clockout (the Egyptian Underworld) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eternal Sky (Audio CD)
"Eternal Sky" is the first album put out by the Anubes. It revolves around a story of some Egyptologists discovering a portal into another dimension, where the Ancient Egyptian gods control the fate of whoever steps into it. In a nutshell, the plot consists of you and your friends being sent on a mission by Anubis to escort a trio of humanoid beings and many souls to the field of reeds.

It's really helpful if you read the booklet before or while you're listening to it. The writer's style of the story is somewhat lacking in some parts, but it gives you the general idea. The music itself is much better for visualising the story. For example, you hear the massive stone door creaking heavily in "Breaking the Seal." "Soul Herder" has energetic tribal beats giving a sense of action and panic. An evil force growls hungrily at you in "Jackal and Nine." There's much more in there, but I'd rather not spoil it for you.

Every song has an Egyptian mood to it, while sounding like it came from outer space at the same time. If you are into ambient spacey stuff, then pick this one up. It's a real trip and won't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anubian Lights - 'Eternal Sky' (Hypnotic/Cleopatra), October 14, 2006
This review is from: Eternal Sky (Audio CD)
I totally forgot all about this stunning 1995 release,of the Anubian Light's debut CD. I bought this disc at the Nik Turner concert that I caught during that summer.Hadn't heard it in ages.It was almost like listening to it for the very first time.Well, sort of.Pure ambient bliss cross-breeded with '90's electronic space rock.A true winner,to say the very least.Tracks here that I found myself playing over were the frantic opener "Breaking The Seal",the somewhat tribal-like "Soul Herder","Arc Of Ra" as well as the CD's two MUST - hear cuts, the atmospheric "Grid Coordinate: Vorp One" and the brain damaging "Field Of Reeds" which both clock in at nine minutes plus. I'm putting this CD back in my 'current rotation stack'. Line-up: Nik Turner - flute, sax&vocals, Tommy Grenas -guitar,synth&keyboards, Simon House-violin, Del Dettmar-synth&MIDI programming, Len Del Rio-synth&tapes, Doran Shelley-guitar&lyre and Brandon Labelle-percussion.You know, technically, one could SAY,that in a way,Anubian Lights is a Hawkwind spin off band.Highly recommended.A must-have.
