Editorial Reviews

When asked recently for the most memorable moment of his career, Phil Everly replied the Albert Hall reunion . It was
September 1983 - ten years on from one of the most acrimonious splits in popular music history- when the Everly
Brothers, Don and Phil, took to the stage at London s Royal Albert Hall. One of the most successful duos of all time, the
Everlys had dominated the charts in the late fifties and early to mid sixties. Their close harmony singing, acoustic guitars and
brilliant songwriting had become instantly recognizable and inspired millions of fans worldwide. On an emotional night in
London, the reunion was an unqualified success and led to the renewal of their partnership on an ongoing basis and many more
years of success, which continue to this day.

The Everly Brothers and I shared space in the sixties at Freedomland, Bronx, NY. My parents took me from Long Island to see them. I was already a fan as a young teenager; our home was filled with their sound. The show was fantastic, and it didn't take much arm-twisting to convince my folks to stay for the second show. Indelible memories. A girl standing next to me in the crowd heard my concern that I had no camera. She had been backstage and had taken pictures. She offered to send copies to me; we exchanged names and addresses. She was from Rye, NY, I recall... hey there, thanks! I was crushed when the Brothers parted ways, always hoping that they'd reunite for their own sakes. The reunion concert on DVD, along with the Odyssey, is incredible. It stops and preserves time. Thing is, the music holds up well... it all could have been recorded yesterday. I'm indebted to the Brothers for the countless hours of enjoyment they've afforded me. But this. It is mesmerizing. Thank you so much, Don and Phil.

Not even the most peripheral rock 'n' roller should need any explanation whatsoever at this point regarding how two young Kentucky-bred brothers placed a stamp upon the Sounds of the Sixties equaled only by Buddy Holly and his Crickets: One listen to nearly every Lennon and McCartney vocal duet from "Love Me Do" onwards - not to mention those most blatant protégés by the name of Simon and Garfunkel - more than prove that particular sonic point.

Then there are albums such as Songs Our Daddy Taught Us and the ever-amazing Roots which created the undeniable, if criminally under-acknowledged template for the Folk- and/or Country-rock of any Dylan, Byrds, or even Rank and File track you'd care to name-check. "We owe those guys everything," the man I like to call Bob is on record as admitting. "They started it all."

Plus need I even mention a staggering string of globe and genre-spanning hit records which continue to reverberate within the DNA of popular music creators and listeners to this very day?

Absolutely not. But what I feel I do need to state here and now, however, is the DVD release of "The Everly Brothers Reunion Concert: Live At The Royal Albert Hall," now here for all to watch, weep, and learn from.

Ending their first run beneath the spotlight with a literally explosive on-stage break-up in 1973 - culminating with Don Everly's caustic statement "The Everly Brothers died ten years ago" - the pair saw and spoke with one another only once (at their father's funeral) during the ensuing downcast decade.

After an incredibly successful career, Phil and Don Everly split up in 1973 and according to many reports, did not speak to each other for ten years. In 1983 this legendary duo reunited at London's Royal Albert Hall. On September 14th, Eagle Records re-released the concert on DVD. Though the concert has been released in many formats over the years, this release includes the documentary "Rock and Roll Odyssey".

The Everly Brothers had an amazing career that included 26 Billboard Top 40 Singles. They were among the first ten artists inducted into the Rock and toll Hall of Fame, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Many artists of the fifties and sixties credit Phil and Don with being an influence on their music including The Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles.

For a duo with this much talent to go silent for ten years, a reunion was a huge event, and it certainly was in 1983. Twenty-seven years after the fact; the event has lost a bit of its cache. Sure, this is an enjoyable way to spend some time if you have not already seen it, but most people already have. These two men are amazing, and they sound great here, but there is not a lot going on to watch as the two stand side by side with their acoustic guitars and sing the classics. There is little banter, much less movement, and the stage lighting is somewhat annoying, and so it makes a better show to listen to than to watch.

The production seems to have missed some obvious opportunities. As the show opens with the two men entering the performance area through the audience, one cannot help but wonder where the behind the scenes shots are.

Excellent DVD! This concert brings back floods of memories and what great music they wrote and performed. Would recommend this concert to anyone who enjoyed their music in the 50's and 60's. It's a nostalgic trip you will truly enjoy!

After 10 years apart from each other, Don and Phil got back together in 1983 on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They and their band (with Albert Lee on guitar). The Everlys and the band all sound great. The video and audio production here is excellent. One of my very favorite live concert DVDs.
