After I finished the book I went back to Amazon to see if anyone left with the same feelings I had on this book, and was surprised to see only glowing reviews. I can't help but wonder that since the book came out a few days ago, and most people have jobs (I happen to be on sabbatical, so have plenty of time to read diet books all day) the 20+ immediate 5-star reviews might, in some part, be powered by a PR machine. Maybe I'm jaded.
I'm giving this book two stars. At the end of the day it's not harmful. It's not even a diet really. And since no one will screw up their lives doing it, it does deserve some credit. I had read an article by the author in Ladies Home Journal a few months ago with an excerpt consisting of steps for lasting weight loss. They seemed pretty doable and practical, so I pre-ordered the book. The two page spread in LHJ was basically the only worthwhile part of the book.
The pros:
-Maria basically tells you how she lost weight, which was to cut back on serving sizes gradually and do some pretty basic exercises. I actually really appreciate the non-crazy, totally do-able, advice.

The cons:
-The books is very repetitive. She even writes "As I've said before" like 9000+ times. If you've already said it, why are you saying it again? This book cost money, I would rather there actually be new information on each page, not the same three pages repeated ad nausea for 300 pages.
-It's an infomercial. I really wondered while reading the book if the author wasn't paid to recommend certain brands and people throughout.
-I now know more about Maria Menounos's parents than I do about my own.

Everygirl's Guide to Diet and Fitness is an interesting and well-written book with Maria's diet, fitness and nutrition advice. There is lots of good information and many beautiful photos (a lot of them of Maria). However, this is not really a diet book so much as a general health and happiness guide.

The chapter on the diet (with which Maria lost 40 pounds) has 13 steps, but most of these are pretty basic. Things like "weight yourself", "buy a journal" and "write down everything you eat for a week". The actual dieting advice is pretty standard: calculate how many calories you need based on your body weight. Then subtract 300-500 per day. That is maybe not a bad approach, but it certainly isn't anything very new. This is basically a calorie counting diet.

I would caution against most people putting too much hope on losing a lot of weight with this diet. Maria may have gained a lot weight when she was younger and then lost it, but she clearly does not appear genetically disposed to be heavy. One look at any of the many bikini photos in the book will make that clear. Most of us are going to have a harder time than Maria did.

If you have significant weight to lose, I would also check out The Protein Express Diet: Rapid Weight Loss with a Simplified Low Carb, High Protein Diet. I have already lost about 18 lbs on this diet and find it to be simple and also inexpensive.

Maria's book has about 25 recipes with nice photos of the prepared dishes. However, there is no nutritional information, not even the number of calories. That seems surprising given that this is a calorie-oriented diet.

Nothing in this book was new to me. And her braggy way of self promotion was getting to me.. Props to her and her flat stomach, but not exactly for the every girl. Lot of talking, little actual helpful tips.

Maria made a few great points. She isn't obsessive with fitness and I love that she emphasizes being more active by couting your steps. She is also very realistics. However, This book was VERY repetitive. A lot of what she discussed was discussed in her first book.

While Maria is now a multi-millionaire, when she started out, she was living in the basement of a house with her boyfriend Keven. These tips work.

I agree with her on not telling anyone that you're trying to lose weight. Plus moving our bodies is so important. Also love how many pictures of her stint on Dancing With The Stars she includes with Derek Hough throughout the book. There's great Greek recipes too!!
