Review

“With so many diets and fitness trends out there, sometimes the most obvious route to wellness is good, old-fashioned common sense. . . . Maria Menounos lost forty pounds on a ‘common-sense’ diet, exercise and lifestyle regime she created that doesn’t require a lot of money and time.”StyleBistro

“When you look at Maria you want what she’s having. This book tells you how to get it.”—Suzanne Somers

“I love Maria’s approach to health and fitness. Her tips are easy to follow and she proves you don’t have to avoid some of your favorite foods in order to be fit. I recommend this book to anyone trying to get a jumpstart on a healthy lifestyle!”—Serena Williams

“For the multitasking busy girl, Maria proves by example that it can be done! Maria is very inspiring.”—Kim Kardashian

“It’s not about being skinny. Maria shows you how to live a happy and healthy life—and still indulge. This book finds new ways to help you stay inspired and gives you techniques that will change your life and get you in shape.”—Khloé Kardashian

After I finished the book I went back to Amazon to see if anyone left with the same feelings I had on this book, and was surprised to see only glowing reviews. I can't help but wonder that since the book came out a few days ago, and most people have jobs (I happen to be on sabbatical, so have plenty of time to read diet books all day) the 20+ immediate 5-star reviews might, in some part, be powered by a PR machine. Maybe I'm jaded.
I'm giving this book two stars. At the end of the day it's not harmful. It's not even a diet really. And since no one will screw up their lives doing it, it does deserve some credit. I had read an article by the author in Ladies Home Journal a few months ago with an excerpt consisting of steps for lasting weight loss. They seemed pretty doable and practical, so I pre-ordered the book. The two page spread in LHJ was basically the only worthwhile part of the book.
The pros:
-Maria basically tells you how she lost weight, which was to cut back on serving sizes gradually and do some pretty basic exercises. I actually really appreciate the non-crazy, totally do-able, advice.

The cons:
-The books is very repetitive. She even writes "As I've said before" like 9000+ times. If you've already said it, why are you saying it again? This book cost money, I would rather there actually be new information on each page, not the same three pages repeated ad nausea for 300 pages.
-It's an infomercial. I really wondered while reading the book if the author wasn't paid to recommend certain brands and people throughout.
-I now know more about Maria Menounos's parents than I do about my own.

I saw Maria Menounos on Good Morning America and thought that she seemed "real" and ordered her books right away. After flipping through both of them for about 20 minutes I knew they had to go back. I feel like her books are her own personal brag books. Pages are filled with her in cute poses as she talks about her wonderful life achievements and losing her college weight. Though she and I are both in our 30s, I have had two children and have a much different income. We hardly relate. I just felt that it was a lot of fluff. Good intentions, but fluff.

Nothing in this book was new to me. And her braggy way of self promotion was getting to me.. Props to her and her flat stomach, but not exactly for the every girl. Lot of talking, little actual helpful tips.

The book was very redundant and mostly a picture book of Maria in bikinis. She constantly states that she doesn't believe in diets but she writes a diet book. Doesn't make sense. Not much to learn since she doesn't believe in diets. Don't like how Maria acts like she knows the struggle of an overweight person. She was thin her whole life, went to college and ate some junk food and gained some weight. There's no way she can understand the struggle of a person who has been overweight since they were a child and on a lifetime of diets and a lifetime of ridicule from people.

Maria made a few great points. She isn't obsessive with fitness and I love that she emphasizes being more active by couting your steps. She is also very realistics. However, This book was VERY repetitive. A lot of what she discussed was discussed in her first book.

The "EveryGirl's Guide" books are quickly becoming my favorite "how to" series. All the advice offered is practical and easily applied. Maria speaks in a relatable manner and uses her stories to teach, motivate, and inspire. I've incorporated many elements from "EveryGirl's Guide to Life" into my own life and I'm looking forward to incorporating many elements from this book as well.

This book isn't just informative, but it's fun! Learning about Maria's tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle along with a balanced diet focusing on the right nutrition, I wasn't just feeling better, I was motivated to change my life and live better. This was an amazing gift and I can't wait to pass this along to some of my friends! Thank you, Maria.

bad book: this book is basically just about herself and her greek background. no real tips on losing weight, diet or exercise. THERE HAVE GOT TO BE BETTER BOOKS OUT THERE.
