5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference January 13, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The book covers all aspects of songwriting with easy reading and pretty good humor. Although aimed at the novice, there is plenty of good advice for those who think they know it all, but fail to follow the basics. I've bought several for friends, and they all gave it a solid thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Few Words From CJ's Dad February 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm CJ's Dad so I may be a little biased (;c). However, I give copies of this book to aspiring songwriters that I meet and suggest that if they want to pursue songwriting as a profession or as a serious hobby that the book will help them. It will. I am serious about folk music and have written several "family" folk songs and I find the book is an excellent reference. I also happen to know that there are young folks who come to Nashville after reading CJ's book who are better prepared for big time career moves. It can happen if you work hard, have talent, and try. It helps to start very young, so I like to give this book as a present to young musicians! Best of luck to all you writers out there, young and old, I hope you like my boy's book. He's a real person who comes home when he can and picks a few with his old Dad. Playing music with CJ is like driving a Cadillac! Plus I love him! It just don't get no better than that!

2.0 out of 5 stars Beginners book October 7, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is for a teen or beginner starting their first expeditions into the world of songwriters. The book gives about a paragraph in every possible area of music starting with the history of man, but gives less info of use to intermediate or above levels. One glaringly hilarious inclusion is the suggestion that you can make a living as a musician in NYC but not elsewhere, or that a deal can be made on a handshake in the music biz. The section on the Nashville chart system is helpful. Take a look, but be sure to supplement with "Tunesmith" by Jimmy Webb, or any of the many other books by successful Hit songwriters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for songwriters of all ages October 14, 2014
Format:Paperback
Great book for songwriters of all ages, in a vague sort of way. Due to the high cost of obtaining the rights to many popular lyrics, the author mentions the name of the song and it's your job to hunt down the lyrics for further exploration. I would have preferred the author penned their own lyrics to make a point, rather than the constant back and forth between the book and looking things up. Overall, it's a good BROAD look at songwriting and the business. There isn't too much in depth knowledge in here though.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Never Knew September 17, 2003
By Kenny
Format:Paperback
I own about 50 songwriting books on different sub-topics. This one is the broadest look at the subject- it covers what any ten of the others do. It's not perfect, but if it was a thousand pages longer, it would be. I'm planning a trip to Nashville soon and this will be a big help!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Find ....... February 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm so lucky to have run across this book. I don't aspire to be a professional song writer, but I need to capture the melodies that come to me and, sometimes, mold them into songs. Now I think I can.

2.0 out of 5 stars Teaches little about songwriting. December 25, 2013
By JD
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I stopped reading after reaching chapter 10 in which the author illustrates an E mixolyidan scale as containing the notes E, Gb, Ab, A, B, Db, and D. If you know anything about music theory you know why this is blasphemous. There is little to be learned from this book if you are already an experienced musician. This is basically a big handbook on what songwriting is and doesn't give you any real insight into how to compose music.
