Editorial Reviews

The second blast installment of the Rolling Stones Of The RAP game, Public Enemy. The EVIL Empire Of Everything leaves no stones unturned. The fraternal not identical twin album of HEROES, they are said to talk to each other while the listener rivets in. Its almost like a stage show on record. A much anticipated 14 tracks including the 5 year later gusher HARDER THAN YOU THINK which has rewritten the independent record books. Again the team spreads collaboration into a soldiers reach into radical musical troops, contributors ZIGGY MARLEY, HENRY ROLLINS, DAVY DMX, and introducing lesser known names to the Planet Earth through their similar music and message vision. Songs like DONT GIVE UP THE FIGHT, BEYOND TRAYVON, ICEBREAKER speak loud and say plenty in these times today. And the song .EVERYTHING speaks volumes on the world we live in right here and right now. This is an great fitting match, a more eclectic avant garde album to the Part 1 HEROES release.

Customer Reviews

What a powerful album, this group gets better with each offering they bring.
Charleton Smith
PE's early albums were hard-hitting and breathtakingly exciting - this one is more mellow but just as strong.
Maisy Yardley
And that makes the topics PE express all the more relatable to those listening.

After July's Most of My Heroes Still Don't Appear on No Stamp, Public Enemy is back with their twelfth studio album. Chuck D stated in an interview that these two album are fraternal twins, but other than the fact that they were released in the same year these two are completely different from one another. In many ways this album improves on it's predecessor's missteps, but it has stronger shortcomings.

One of my issues with "Most of My Heroes..." was that Chuck D's flow was all over the place. Well on this he sounds a lot more comfortable which makes for a more enjoyable experience. Lyrically Chuck D is just Chuck D. Talking about politics, racism, and even giving us a Trayvon tribute on track five "Beyond Trayvon". He still fumbles a few times, most notable on track six "Everything": "Got no million follow friends on Twitter on Facebook. Look at my friends." It just sounds like it was a bad take, but they were too lazy to do another one. The beat for that song is amazing, but Chuck sounds uncomfortable on it.

Production wise this album is much more diverse than its "twin". You have the reggae influenced "Don't Give Up The Fight," the soul influenced "Everything," and the rock influenced "Riotstarted". In my opinion the production on this is more enjoyable than "Most of My Heroes..." I really enjoyed the production on the last album, but I enjoy some diversity so this album gets the W in that category.

With this album we see the return of Flavor Flav getting the spotlight on some songs. These songs, for me, have always been the low points of PE albums so I wasn't too excited about this. His songs really ruin the flow of the album and bring down the overall quality because they're so generic.

When I heard about Public Enemy making a comeback in 2012,I was very excited to say the least. On the other hand this comeback seemed delayed for release again and again. By the time it finally arrived it came in the form of two seperate albums. The first of them was Most Of My Heroes Still Don't Appear On No Stamp, followed by this one as the second. That first album did a superb job at realizing PE's sociopolitical microscope in order to visually magnify a lot of the truths and contradictions we all see,but for the most part force ourselves to deny. And it did an excellent job, especially when it came to utilizing the musical medium of "the funk" to illustrate that almost like verbally expressed pages in a book. On the second part of the comeback, the same intention is there but the approach is slightly different.

Right off the bat,the musical difference expressed here is that this album focuses on music that is more epic and cinematic. The raps themselves are similarly expressed as very lyrical verses and choruses rather than James Brown style rapping/singing. On the title song,"Don't Give Up The Fight","PEace","ResPEct/Spit Out Your Mind","Riotstared" and "ICEbreaker" the overall intent here focuses more on the human side of societies ills. This is especially evident when the funk is again on heavily expressed in the music on "Beyond Trayvon",one of my favorites in it's tales on how racial profiling isn't just a problem in itself, but because it now has mainstream acceptability. A similar intent shows up on "Notice (Know This)".

Strong album by Public Enemy in their twenty fifth year as a recording artist. This is number two in their releases for 2012.

Overall, this is an excellent Cd. First of all, Chuck took the time to write liner notes! Who does that anymore? The tracks are produced by Juice Juice, G-Wiz, Davey D, Sammy Kim, and Felony Music. Flavor has a solo track(31 Flavors) My favorite track are Riotstarted(feat Tom Morello and Henry Rollins), Say It Like It Really Is, and 1 (PEace). This cd did not disappoint!

PUBLIC ENEMY! Just.hearing those words creates excitement, and they stay in tune.. I'm happy to purchase CD. I've been a fan all my life. The music is great and the lyrics are astounding .com . They pay tribute to Trayvon Martin. This will be added to my favorite list just like their others CD's. PE fan forever.
