3.0 out of 5 stars Moderately Disappointed October 14, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Update 10/19/14
I completed the game last night on survival mode and it ended up taking me just shy of 30 hours, including copious amounts of exploration. When I wrote my previous update I thought there was a chance I'd be torn between giving this game 4 stars and 5 stars. I had no idea that I would instead be choosing between 3 and 4 stars.

First the good:

1. I love the art in this game. The characters, the environments, the atmosphere - all are incredible and make for a truly interesting experience.

2. The sound is also top notch, not only are the sounds outstanding but the game does a great job of reminding you that you are never really safe. During my exploration of the game, I found random sounds (glass breaking, doors squeaking, moans or footsteps of enemies) interrupting my sometimes relaxed Lewis-and-Clark mood.

3. I also like the upgrade system - I was able to tailor "Seb's" strengths to my playstyle and I really enjoyed that.

Now the bad:

1. Controls/Bugs - my biggest issue with this game is the buggy controls. The biggest offender is the action prompts - you have to be in the perfect spot for an action to appear...you can't be too far away or too close (really? too close to an item Tango Gameworks?) Sometimes my character would get stuck in the environment or he would choose to suck up the green gel rather than hurdle an obstacle which inevitably led to his death. The camera can really get wild at times too, sometimes I found myself not being able to see anything in close quarters or Seb's butt decided it wanted to stop over and stay for coffee during an intense battle.

2. Recycling of Enemies - you will "kill" several mini bosses/bosses once, twice, maybe three times throughout the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Return to Old School Survival Horror! October 15, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4|Edition:Standard
Let me start by saying that this game is tough. In the first chapter, I died about 10 times before finally seeing the opening credits roll. For me, this is not a bad thing as I like a challenge.

I also love survival horror. This game, which is Shinji Mikami masterpiece, shines in all areas to me. While the framerate is 30 FPS and the game is presented in letterbox format (which could put off some), I believe it was created this way to reflect a horror film feel to it. I get that rustic original Resident Evil vibe while still getting the gameplay of Resident Evil 4, which is Mikami's defining game in my opinion. Mikami is the father to the Resident Evil series and also served as a producer on other hits such as the Devil May Cry series and Viewtiful Joe series. This guy knows how to make/produce great games.

Getting back to The Evil Within, the gameplay again has that old school survival horror vibe to it. You will die multiple times. However, the locations that this game takes you through in it's 20+ hour campaign is ripped straight from the best horror flicks. From mental hospitals, wooded forests with dilapidated cabins in the still of the night, to haunted mansions; it's all here. If you love horror flicks and have been waiting on a game to love, buy this. Another throwback is how the game is divided into Chapters, 15 actually, which reminds me of games from yesteryear although being on next gen systems.

I have read reviews that speak on the graphics and texture pop ins. I am playing on the PS4 and have not noticed any pop in. Maybe I am just lucky. And yes, I am that person who stands on the edge of the pier in Chapter 2, marveling at the water effects and lighting of the moon reflecting from the lake while viewing the dark abandoned lighthouse across the sprawl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Survival Horror Has Returned October 14, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4|Edition:Standard
Foreword: People are split with this game; they either love it or hate it. Be advised that I REALLY enjoy this game (as you can tell below). Definitely read my review, but take a look at both sides - the people who actually have useful information to make an informed decision. If you have particular questions, PLEASE leave me a comment and I'll be more than happy to respond. I'd rather have people make a good decision and NOT buy the game if they won't enjoy than buy it and be upset with it.
-------------------------------------------------
Running is always an option.

In a lot of horror games, especially ones with combat, you start with a "stealth" approach but once discovered can start firing off rounds and be fine in the end. Not here. The Evil Within is not only terrifying and grotesque, but it hits fantastic notes of survival and knowing when to fight and when to run.

I would describe this game as a throw back to Resident Evil 4 but with updated controls and aesthetics. To me, it plays like a cross between RE4 and The Last of Us.

Gameplay: The game consists of moving through various locations as you locate people and move the story forward. It starts out with a bang, and if you've watched any of the game videos, the first level will look familiar. You choose to play on Casual Mode (for weaklings as the game describes) or Survival (the normal difficulty setting). Throughout the game your best friend is [R1], as this will put you into a crouched stealth position. It's essential to staying alive, but not without drawbacks. For one, you can't see as much, meaning it will be easier for an enemy to sneak up on you. Luckily, they make awful noises that will alert you to if someone (or something) is near.
