The first edition of this work, published in 1977, was considered a landmark in legal scholarship. Subsequent editions have lived up to that standard. The present edition (3rd) is expanded to cover related laws in the United States that impact wildlife. The organization of this book follows an historical view up until the 1970s. From that point the book follows the development of wildlife law in response to the changing cultural values of "the environmental era."

There is little concerning wildife law in the United States that is not covered in this volume. The exception is the myriad of state laws, a task that would have consumed ten times the amount of space. All in all, this is a standard reference in the highest sense of the word. I have used this as a text in not only wildlife management classes, but also environmental ethics and environmental policy. The book is that useful. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in wildlife and wildlife law.

The book is well written but being from 1997 it is now dated. I wish there was an update or new edition available.

The book does a good job of reviewing the history of wildlife law so if you are looking for a historical review the 1997 date will not be too much of a problem. If you want the most current information you will have to supplement a lot or pick another book.

Whether you're in law school, in the process of specializing for various other degrees, or, like me, are very interested in the preservation of our wildlife (my focus is on wetlands, waterbirds, and shorebirds), this book gives a fascinating look at how we came to have the wildlife-related laws and treaties that we do, the roles of various folks through the decades who were able to push their visions into the realm of reality, and how, when we have a Congress that actually does its job and supports the nation's interests rather than playing games of obfuscation, miracles can be accomplished.

This is also, surprisingly, a real page turner -- I had to limit myself to only a few pages every night, else I'd stay up reading (just one more page, just one more chapter. . .) all night. It's that well-written.

Enjoy!
