Product Description

Delve deep into the origins and enigmas of the scriptures with this groundbreaking program from the acclaimed series MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE. No death in all of history has had greater impact on mankind than the biblical accound of the death of Jesus Christ. And while his life is cloaked in mystery the details of his death remain even more veiled. Could events have occurred as written in the Bible? Join scholars and archaeologists on a historic inquiry into the last days of Jesus. Follow Him from His Passover entry into the Temple to the Last Supper; from trial to execution and miraculous ressurection. Walk the streets of Jerusalem's Old City in His footsteps and exploer a tomb in a cave near Mount Zion that dramatically alters our understanding of the greatest story ever told. DVD Features: Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

The History Channel's The Execution of Jesus takes a level, inquisitive approach to sorting out facts from assumptions about the final, heady days of Christ's life. The program asks a handful of biblical scholars if we should accept as truth events that followed popular Galilee prophet Jesus' provocative entry into Jerusalem, a center of power where he attacked the social order on a number of fronts, declared himself the Messiah, and was subsequently condemned and killed. One of the intriguing questions concerns how much of the gospels--written long after Christ's life--are acts of artistic license. Other historians wonder what it was, exactly, that Christ did to so rile Jerusalem's leaders they engineered his elaborate sufferings and crucifixion. This interesting documentary doesn't shed any new light, but it provides some tantalizing details (the discovery of the possible burial place of Jewish high priest Caiaphas) and alternative views of the Resurrection. --Tom Keogh

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special April 10, 2006
Verified Purchase
The subject of this show is the last week of the life of Jesus of Nazareth from the triumphal entry to Jerusalem to the resurrection after the crucifixion. A brief bit of time is devoted to the immediate aftermath of the resurrection as well.

Most of the show is fairly well done but was done from the perspective of "The Jesus Seminar" types. These scholars make an effort to look for the "historical Jesus" and have very little patience for the Christian religion except as subject matter for scholarly debate.

There is nothing particularly wrong with this show but neither is there anything particularly right either. It does provide a nice visual environment but it is not very meaty from either a religious, historical or cultural standpoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jesus's Execution April 25, 2008
Verified Purchase
Of the documentaries I've seen over the years on how Jesus was executed and just what path he actually walked, this one does a good job of trying to clear things up. Take it with a grain of salt since all we have to go on is written, verbal and scientific findings. All in all I enjoyed it and had the same feeling at the end:Sadness and Joy. He died for us and the manner in which he was brutally beaten and then nailed to the cross is very heart wrenching. But it and enjoy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars More Questions Than Answers March 9, 2012
Documentaries about Jesus typically offer more questions than answers. This one was no exception. For me, even the Gospels of the Bible never adequately answered my questions about Jesus. It was more like reading excerpts from an unfinished story that inevitably triggered additional questions the answers to which were not to be found anywhere in the Bible. All of my questions about Jesus (along with other philosophically challenging questions about God and the universe we live in) were finally answered when I was fortunate enough to come across a copy of The Urantia Book many years ago. As the most recent epochal revelation of divine truth bestowed upon our planet, 77 of its 196 Papers are devoted exclusively to The Life and Teachings of Jesus.

I recall being repeatedly scolded by more than one nun in my youth when I would ask things like "Why do the Gospels jump from Jesus as a kid in the Temple around age 12 or so to Jesus as a full grown adult in his mid-30s? What happened to Jesus during those intervening years?" In response to these and other thought-provoking questions I persistently asked, I was often told God didn't want me to know those things. They wanted me to just shut up and smile and be blissfully content on the outside whilst on the inside I choked upon their fossilized versions of tainted truth without rebelliously questioning either the actual source of their dead-dogma doctrines or their primitive Gestapo-methods of using fear and intimidation and even occasionally physical violence to exert their Nazi-like mind-control over those of us who were unfortunate enough to have become their intellectual prisoners. To paraphrase, they were utterly clueless when confronted by the curiosity of a child.

I thank God who has graciously seen fit to provide me with unlimited access to detailed records of those missing years in the life of Jesus along with more complete versions of Jesus final days in the flesh that are covered elsewhere.
