Enjoyable movie, not the pinnacle of cinematography, but a fun movie to watch with the boys.

We all know The Expendables franchise doubles as a rest home for 1980's action movie geezers. In between shooting scenes, these creaky hombres are probably either playing a game of mahjong, slurping soup, or slapping Salonpas relief patches on each other. I will say that I had a shockingly good time watching The Expendables 3, on the strength of three very lively performances.

Is it even worth it to mention the plot? It's about how his den mother instincts get the better of CIA contractor Barney Ross (Stallone). After the latest harrowing mission, Barney has one of those quiet freak-outs about how his team is old and past their prime and, at this stage, pretty much just tempting fate. He retires his old-ass crew and goes to assemble a much younger, more tech-savvy bunch, his junior Expendables. They're just the sort of whippersnapper world-beaters that would scoff at one of Ross' tactics: "THAT would be a good plan, if it was still 1985."

Mel Gibson is the featured big bad, and he is awesome, easily the best actor in this bunch. Barney is shocked to see nefarious arms dealer, Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), very much not dead. Stonebanks happens to be co-founder of The Expendables before he went rogue, and that's a particularly bitter pill Barney had to swallow. A menacing Gibson lends his character great color, channeling Martin Riggs' brand of bat-guano crazy. Stonebanks sells nuclear weapons to whichever highest bidder AND sneers at valuable oil paintings (then he buys the oil paintings). Gibson does play the most convincing a-ho1e.

Of the new blood Barney recruits, the standout is badass beauty and MMA champ Ronda Rousey. I'm not saying she acts the hell out of her part. I'm saying she has a presence.

I don't know what to rate The Expendables 3, so you'll have to bear with me, examine the facts and make your own conclusions.
On it's own merits as an action movie, The Expendables 3 gets four shining stars EASILY. The action is nearly non-stop, explosive, and the chemistry is fun. But when compared against the great action movies of the Eighties - Die Hard, Rambo, Predator, and Lethal Weapon... Expendables 3 comes up wanting. And the worst part is, it really wants to hearken back to the heyday of its stars.

Lionsgate thinks that by getting together all the heavy hitters of the Eighties: Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford...and some more modern heroes like Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, and Jet Li...that they can make a good action movie. Unfortunately, it's not the action stars at fault here, its the action! And the action here lacks that edge that Eighties movies had. The explosions are computer generated, the set-pieces lack inventiveness, the one-liners are flat (more on this later) and the stakes are non-existent, because our heroes can walk through fire, nuclear explosions, and in all likelihood be decapitated and drowned and return for a sequel (in other news...that's a movie I want to see).

But let's talk about what's good. Firstly, the chemistry between the stars is really fun. Stallone and Statham have a cool bro thing going, and there's fun, if clunky banter between the rest of the cast. In such a huge cast, it's easy to spot the standouts. Everyone does a good job - these guys were hired because they can fire a gun, throw a punch, and look cool while doing it. But the real standouts, I think you'll find, are Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, and Mel Gibson.

The boys are hitting their stride and a real rhythm has developed in the series and I just want Sly to keep cranking 'em out. The youngsters hold up their end (except when one gets to spend the entire last sequence in an elevator shaft doing nothing - the director's fault I'd say) bring just the added energy shot to the franchise. Harrison Ford is great and I am not a fan of his. But it seemed like the first time in years he's had fun in a movie and I just had a good time watching him. The plot? Move things along by blowing crap up. And it's good to see Snipes back and I hope this gets him some more roles.
SUMMARY: You know what you're getting into here and if you saw the first and second, this will be a five star for you. If you just don't get it, and never thought any of these muscle men could act, then it's a 1 star just like you've probably been giving most of them for 40 years. There's not much middle ground here.

Expendables 3 is the third installment of the Action Smash Franchise starring Sylvester Stallone and pretty much every other action star on planet earth. What you have in Exp3 is about 2 hrs of a great time at the movies! Stallone is joined this time by newcomers Harrison Ford,Antonio Banderas,Wesley Snipes and a slew of young talent.Mel Gibson is the best choice in villain yet and hes also one of the Best Actors of all time! Stallone returns as Barney Ross,Statham,Lundgren,Couture and Schwarzenegger all have nice time on the screen.I guess alot of people complain you cant see blood or anything when theres gunfire or slashing,So NOT TRUE!!
This movie is still as violent as ever lots of action, gunfire, explosions and BLOOD..I guess the PG-13 rating scared everyone away.I have to admit i was disappointed when i heard but there was no way this was gonna fail. And i was not let down. The action scenes are Amazing! Stallone is on top of his game as always and does a great job leading his old and new team against Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson) in an all out warzone.Banderas is hilarious and almost steals the show.Ford is great as always,Gibson is the real standout with his Welcomed return to action movies of this caliber.Whoever complained about this movie must have been expecting Lawrence of Arabia. This is an ACTION MOVIE guys not a drama! If you want action Buy this movie!
