The Explosive Generation's lurid cover and promo posters promise wanton, defiant delinquents ("Never has youth gone on such a rampage.... Never has a motion picture gone so far in telling their raging story! They're kids with grown-up ideas and grown-up urges, and sometimes they may go too far!").

Not so. The Explosive Generation is a realistic portrayal of the inter-generational tensions that were changing American society in the 1960s. It's about teens experiencing adult feelings and fears, looking for guidance in a world that still treats them as children, and beginning to demand respect -- and fight for it. The issues are real and the characters are realistic.

And William Shatner's sensitive performance, a few years before Star Trek turned him into a blowhard, is a treat.

"The Explosive Generation" from 1961 literally, for entertainment value, is packed with controversy and challenging ideas within every frame, while at the same time, being in decent enough taste to watch. But don't let its relatively tasteful approach fool you; what begins as a frank-enoough high school discussion about -- aghast, sex! (this WAS 1961) -- between high schoolers (one of them played by Patty McCormack) and their teacher (portrayed by a pre-Star Trek William Shatner) ends up being a Cilvil Rights-blueprinted pattern of demonstrations, threats of fire hose usage (a common crowd control tool in early 1960's America) by the high school principal (played by a pre-Get Smart Edward Platt), a silent wordless demonstration by the students (even at the basketball game!) While very tame by post-2000 standards, "The Explosive Generation" is a gem from a time when its was thought that students should be seen and not heard (except when answering the teachers' questions in class), when manners were backed by a stronger sense of right-and-wrong, and when political activism was still not tainted -- but it tested authority that too itself for granted. Purchase "The Explosive Generation", and let it explode from your DVD player onto the screen with exciting, wake-up-call food-for-thought!

This film is "fab"ulous! Written by Joseph Landon and directed by Buzz Kulik, it starred a young William Shatner(pre-STAR TREK), child actors Patty McCormick and Billy Gray. Check out Lee Kinsolving and Beau Bridges - as a young football player. Kinsolving steals the film from Shatner as a very mature high schooler. Also, in discussions of pre-martial sex, it is ahead of it's time - as it was handled, by the students, in an adult way, way better than the "adults"(they were hysterical). Suffice to say, I would highly recommend this for all kids and their parents! A lot more than an early 60's drama!!!

I got quite a kick out of this movie. Who doesn't enjoy seeing a pre-Captain Kirk Shatner playing a touchy feely 60s teacher who wants to be buddies with the students by letting them talk about (eegads) sex in his classroom? It's all a bit over-wrought of course and so makes you chuckle at the era it portrays. And if that weren't enough Patty McCormack is hawt in that cute way that modern actresses are incapable of being. If you and your friends enjoy the occasional bad old movie yuck fest this one is perfect.
