Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–8—Amelia, age 12 and the youngest of four princesses, feels that she is too ordinary to be royal. However, she's happy with her life and with the fact that she will never have to rule her kingdom. When a fatal illness strikes the land, the princesses are sent away. The queen and king fall victim to the illness, and an evil uncle is called upon to be king until the oldest princess becomes 18. He turns the three older sisters into a tree and two swans and wreaks havoc upon the kingdom. Amelia escapes his evil transformations, but realizes that it's up to her to save her kingdom. The story begins slowly but gathers momentum with many twists and turns. It contains numerous elements of the classic stories including the battle between good and evil, magic, and hidden identities. The characters are one-dimensional, the story is a bit too long, and the level of the vocabulary is uneven. However, the book would be enjoyed by younger students who read above grade level.—Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC END

As a teacher, I read a lot of books written for young people, and this has been my favorite of the summer. It's a terrifically engaging story with the perfect mixture of suspense and adventure. I'll be recommending it to my students all year!

I was really disappointed in this book, after seeing the other reviews. This book is incredibly inconsistent and disorganized. The chronology of the plot jumps around, not in a way that adds anything to the story--it felt like an early draft got published instead of a finished story. The anachronisms drove me crazy--the world-building felt half-formed, like it was something inconvenient for the author to bother with so she just didn't.

While I admire Ms. Ebbitt's themes and girl-power ideals, I can't recommend this book to anyone.

I had a great time reading this book and can't wait to read it with my daughter. The Exta-Ordinary Princess lives in a rich, textured world with lots of nooks and crannies that I hope future books will explore. All the brief back-stories and allusions to a deeper world history reminded me of my first explorations of Tolken's world. This is a book I wish I had found when I was 10 and diving into my local library shelves but I'm happy to have found it as a parent.

This is a fabulous adventure tale especially for young girls (and adults as well as I couldn't put it down!) It was the perfect gift for my friend's daughter. Strong themes of courage, friendship, family and adventure. I hope the author is working on a sequel soon!

My daughter and I both loved this book! It's definitely a story that all ages will enjoy. I really hope the author is working on other books because I would love to read more of her work. Such a wonderful way with words--she creates such vivid images. This will definitely be on our gift-giving list for my daughters' friends!

I gave this book to my niece as a gift. She read it in one weekend and then asked me for the next one. (I hope there are other related books in the works. My niece is already looking forward to them!)

My twins had been fighting over this book for a week until I relented and bought a second copy. They usually share very well. Finally, there is peace in the house again, and plenty of role playing as Princess Amelia....
