Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

“In this deceptively simple yet surprisingly uplifting tome, Cross demonstrates the transformative power of a simple list. Right after her 36th birthday, she decided to compose a list of challenges and goals she would endeavor to check off before she turned 40. Ranging from the secular to the saintly, the 40-item list included simple activities like skinny-dipping and finding a church (“Pick a religion, any religion”), grand schemes (“Get Googleable”), and life-changing challenges (learning to surf required Cross to overcome an intense fear of drowning). The plucky Cross narrates her journey—failures and all—and the end-product is an inspiring mix of anecdote and advice that will empower readers and encourage them to follow their own dreams. “I’m not a certified life coach—or a certified anything else for that matter,” she says in conclusion. “What I am, is someone who’s been through a lot, and is not just willing, but thrilled to share what she’s learned.” And readers will be thrilled to hear what she has to say” — Publisher’s Weekly

Review

“Susan Campbell Cross’ The FabYOUList is not only a very fun read, but a road map for a happy and fulfilling life, written by a fearless, hilarious, and damned insightful woman.” — Tom Bergeron, Host of Dancing with the Stars

The FabYOUList is an inspiring book that will encourage you to get out of the house and into the parachute, computer class or that foreign country you've always dreamed of visiting. What I love most about Susan’s message is that it’s pro women and pro living…it’s not about waiting until you retire or holding off until the kids are grown. It’s about doing it NOW!”— Kym Douglas, author of Bliss Happens and Lifestyle Expert, The Ellen DeGeneres Show

“Cross is like the best friend we all want to have – disarmingly honest, funny, relatable and sometimes heartbreakingly insecure – but through it all, courageous and positive as she tackles each experience in a way that has you rooting for her success.” — Nancy Alspaugh Author of Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits

If you're like most of us, you probably have some dreams that you just never got around to fulfilling. That's what happened with the author of this book. There she was, a happily married mother of three, when she woke up to the fact that she was approaching 40 and still had dreams that would never happen if she didn't do something about it. So what did she do? She made a list, and started working on it.
What she didn't know, of course, was that breaking out of her regular routine would open her to adventures she never could have anticipated. More than that, it opened doors for her that allowed her to explore and develop her own hidden potential. Those doors led her to a deeper sense of identity and an even richer, more fulfilling life.
Along the way, there were mishaps that sometimes occurred (some funny, some not), and lessons learned - about herself and about life in general. The result is a rather unusual memoir that not only will make you smile, it may also make you stop and think about all those things you wish you had done, and the potential you may have yet to explore. Reading Susan's story may even prompt you to make your own list, which no doubt will be different from hers, but not to fear. She offers many good pointers that will be of help if you decide to carve out your own path and insert a little adventure into your life.
Written with candor and humor, this is an enjoyable read that gives us a good glimpse of the humanness we all share.

As a woman who has put herself on the back burner for far too long and is now at a total loss about what to do with myself, this inspiring and very entertaining book helped me find direction by creating a simple list. The author is wise, warm, and often hysterically funny. This is a memoir that encourages self-improvement. It's about how the author needed to find herself so created a list of all the things she wanted to do before her 40th birthday and then set about fulfilling those challenges. Her list went from the simple, like organize her closet, run a 5K, and meet the neighbors, to the ambitious, like get a paid acting job and write a book. Along the way she has successes and failures but always keeps her sense of humor and looks at everything as a learning experience. At the end, the thing that was the total life changer was conquering her fear, which opened up an amazing number of possibilities and opportunities. I highly recommend this book to any woman -- or man -- who needs advice and encouragement on how to take that first step to changing their life.

I laughed out loud and cried. This is WAY more than a "how-to-make-a-list" book! Very inspiring, honest, empowering and thoughtful. It subtly forced me to examine my life, my fears, my goals, and my excuses! I'd highly recommend it to any woman over 30. Well done, Susan Campbell Cross!

Reading Susan's book made me want to start making lists of my own! This book is perfect for readers of any age who want to get the most out of life. I loved reading how Susan checked off all the items on her list, even if the way she did didn't always go as planned. Her book was honest and she approached all of her tasks with a positive and realistic attitude. I will definitely be stealing a couple of her ideas for my own list and share this book with my friends!

This book was a fun, easy read with lots of real-life examples that I could relate to. The author and I are about the same age so her 1980s references were terrific. I love how real she was in talking about her fears of some of the items on her list. And I like how freeing the whole experience sounded. I'm stealing a few of her items and making some of my own and writing my own list :)

While I did really enjoy this book I do have issues. First, this IS NOT A SELF HELP. If you want to learn how to achieve your dream/bucket list/whatever this isn't the book for you. Two, it really should be listed as a memoir. Three, it is organized by category. Not that it's important but it would be neat to see which goal she was able to achieve first and etc. Four, this isn't for my age of people (20) and is better fit for older adults. Five, she is RICH!! There is a certain place that she goes that would take 10 years to save up enough to go and that is just ONE. There is no way I can do my bucket list without being as rich as her.Although if you set aside those factors, it's a good book. You can learn alot about what happened to her and how completing her goal made her, her. It was pretty charming and I probably would recommend it to a friends. =]

A funny and uplifting book, that's an easy read and makes you really think (and laugh). Although some of the things on Susan's bucket list may require a little more financial backing, there's no reason that each of us wouldn't be able to set an absolutely attainable bucket list of our own. Reading this book has inspired me to push the envelope and really go out there and think of some things that I could do that would stretch me out of my comfort zone. It really shows where there's a will, there's a way, and is a fabulous inspiration for both stay-at-home and working moms to start going out and living life (rather than just watching it pass us by)! Whether you are ready to start working on checking things off of your bucket list, or don't know where to start in the assembly of the list itself, this book is a great read that will offer helpful suggestions and motivations to let you know that YOU also can go out there and do it! Highly recommend reading this book!
