Editorial Reviews

A complete portrait of her first 10 years! Dinah's 107 pre-LP singles are united for the first time, in sequence from 1943-53 (when she was the undisputed Queen of the Jukeboxes). Rare pix and detailed notes attend this beautiful box, and Dinah's voice sounds better than ever on these remastered Keynote, Decca and Mercury recordings: her R&B Top 10s Salty Papa Blues; Evil Gal Blues; Ain't Misbehavin'; West Side Baby; Am I Asking Too Much; It's Too Soon to Know; You Satisfy; Baby Get Lost; Long John Blues; I Only Know; It Isn't Fair; I Wanna Be Loved; I'll Never Be Free; Time Out for Tears; My Heart Cries for You; I Won't Cry Anymore; Cold, Cold Heart; Wheel of Fortune; Tell Me Why; Trouble in Mind; New Blowtop Blues; TV Is the Thing (This Year) fabulous indeed!

Juke box Dinah is the theme here and it contains most of her early singles, though it does not include the Apollo sides. But what it does include flows beautifully in it's chronological sequence. The list of singers that could completely inhabit a lyric is a short one and Dinah is in the club. That ability is on full display here as are a good sampling of her earlier bluesier sides showing her gospel roots. The liner notes liken her style to a cross between Bessie Smith's punch and Billie Holiday's phrasing. Some of these sides display production affectations of the period with orchestral and choral backings, like I said, "classy". Hip-O-Select's packaging is first rate, 7-inch style, like their Hollywood Ella release. That will, no doubt, rub some (CDs and consumers) the wrong way but it's aesthetically pleasing.

This is one artist whose output deserves a serious reassessment. It is incomprehensible to me that she's not better known. Having said that, I have to admit that I'd never heard of her until this last December when I played a Christmas CD compilation that included a song called "Ol' Santa." After my initial shock at the gorgeous purity of the voice, I remember exclaiming, "who the hell was that?" I've since been on an aural quest to answer my own question. In my search for her music, I discovered this wonderful set. Comprised of her pre-album output that graced jukeboxes throughout the 40s and early 50s, this is a music-lover's dream(blues, jazz, R@B... it's all here). I compare it with Billie Holiday's Columbia recordings(not surprising, as it seems that Lady Day was one of Dinah's biggest influences).
Where, oh where, are singers like this today? Since America was still dreadfully segregated during that era, most of this material was popular only with 'race' (translation: black) audiences and mostly unheard by white audiences. Thankfully, that ignorance is long passed.
I'm very pleased to be able to enjoy all of these disparate recordings in one nicely packaged compilation. Although a little over-priced, this is essential to my music collection. The pictures and annotation are excellent and informative and the music contained within is both vital and moving. To the pantheon of jazz chanteuses, which is dominated by such stalwarts as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, must be added the great Dinah Washington!!! 100% recommended!

Wow, what a great box set this is. Hip-O-select did a great job on this project. Don't understand why the artists on Chess didn't get the same treatment from Hip-O! This box set will give you a lot of amazing surprises which I have not heard before. If you have the Verve CD of 1997 " The best in Blues" you will notice the difference in quality! CD #4 is the most amazing of the set, you will enjoy the sublime duets with the Ravens and have you ever heard a better version of " The Lord's prayer"? This set is entertaining from beginning to the end and the remastering is well done. A pleasure for the ears! The booklet is great, the package is great. A must for every early R&B lover! Keep it up Hip-O ! You become a serious contender with Bear Family!
