This book focuses mostly on what causes the plague- sort of a detective novel with a zombie twist, rather than the all-out zombie apocalypse books published much more recently (this one was written in the '70s). As a dedicated fan of the genre, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It reminded me of the old Hammer horror films with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

I wish I liked this more than I did, but it never really rose above ok for me. The writing style just didn't grab me. I certainly don't regret reading it, and if you have any interest in the history of the horror genre I highly recommend it. This is a zombie novel through and through. The characters may never talk of zombies, but all the classic ideas are here: a mutated contagion that turns people into mindless monsters whose attacks spread the disease to create the threat of an epidemic. About the only thing missing is the monsters don't have any particular fondness for brains.
