5.0 out of 5 stars The best audiobook I have heard in a long time
I picked this up from my local library to listen in my car during my work commute. The story was so engaging that I looked forward to driving to work so that I could hear more of the story. When I came home, I found myself sitting in my garage so I could listen to just a little bit more before I went inside the house! I'm not a professional reviewer, in fact this is my...

3.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Story With A Less Than Thrilling Ending
This novel is well written, clever, creative and engaging. All the way until about the last 8 chapters. After that I can't recommend this book. The ending seemed rushed. As if Mr. Tobey had either lost his momentum, lost his passion for the story, or was forced to meet a deadline and had to wrap things up too soon. Either way the ending left me with more questions than...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best audiobook I have heard in a long time, March 3, 2011
This review is from: The Faculty Club (Kindle Edition)
I picked this up from my local library to listen in my car during my work commute. The story was so engaging that I looked forward to driving to work so that I could hear more of the story. When I came home, I found myself sitting in my garage so I could listen to just a little bit more before I went inside the house! I'm not a professional reviewer, in fact this is my first review, but I have enjoyed this book so much that I wanted to give it the highest recommendtion. I think the secret society aspect of the story was interesting and I enjoyed the puzzles and decoding along the way. I am going to purchase my own copy of this audiobook so I can listen to the story whenever I want! If you like Dan Brown, Jeffrey Deaver and similar authors, you will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping!, June 4, 2010
I read this book in a night. It's thrilling and never stops moving. What I was most impressed by was the character development, which was in no way shortchanged by the pace of the book. The characters are eminently believable, and very easy to sympathize with. By the end, you can't bear the thought of anything happening to them--which is right where the author wants you. An impressive book, by an impressive new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Fluff and Very Entertaining, January 23, 2011

I had never heard of Danny Tobey when I picked this book up. And I honestly only took the risk because the copy was signed at a bookstore I frequent. So I purchased it and started reading after a week or so. To my wonderful surprise, Danny gets right to the guts of the story. I generally prefer Sci-Fi novels for the same reason, and John Grisham back when he first started, so I was hooked.

There is a basic understanding of all the characters from the start and it is not overly saturated with others either. Ever read a book and had to go back a few chapters just to remember or confirm who someone was? I never had to do that with this book because each character had their own definitive description from the start. After a rather short start this novel really takes off winding you down a maze of conspiracy and mystery. I fear saying anymore as I do not want to spoil the story. After I was about a third of the way through I could not put the book down and had to force myself to go to bed so I was not dragging the next day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, I LOVED it., December 20, 2010
I am an avid reader but have been going through a phase where I can't find anything that interests me. This book was exactly what I needed, a fun adventure. I have no idea why it didn't get great reviews, clearly the reviewers are idiots. I have no connection to this author. I greatly enjoyed reading the book and would and will recommend it to everyone. I hope Mr. Tobey writes many more books in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart-pounding and thrilling ride!, July 10, 2010
By
Robyn Reid (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews
I am an avid consumer of popular fiction, who reads books to be entertained and to escape the day-to-day pressures of life. "The Faculty Club" did just that, fully engrossing me throughout.

In an auspicious debut, Danny Tobey combines the best elements of John Grisham, Stephen King, and Dan Brown, while possessing his own original artistic voice.

The richly-drawn characters and inventive plot twists will keep you guessing and turning pages until the very end. In the course of entertaining, he also provokes thought, posing moral dilemmas, riddles, and puzzles for the reader to turn over in their mind.

I will be recommending "The Faculty Club" to my family and friends and can't wait to read his next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars engaging narrative voice moves the story briskly, June 20, 2010
I was surprised at the negative and condescending PW review.

The narrator is likeable and relatable, an Everyman. At first I thought it was a legal thriller; however, when I realized that there were ah, other elements, it didn't matter. I liked the characters so much that I unhesitatingly went along for the ride.

If the author is reading these reviews, I'd like to tell him that his first novel was a very good read and that I will eagerly pick up his next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super-fun read, June 15, 2010
I had a great time with this book. I can't wait to see what Tobey comes up with next. This is an artfully constructed story about a law student caught in a web of mystery. I especially enjoyed the way the main character reasons his way out of his predicaments. Tobey has drawn upon multiple disciplines -- medicine, law, philosophy, and history -- and, as a result, the story has an inventive intellectual flavor that I liked quite a bit. It also moves quickly, keeping you excited and wondering what's going to happen next. Finally, Tobey has expert comic timing. I really liked the Miles character, who got me laughing out loud at several points during the story. I heartily disagree with Publisher's Weekly. This is a wonderful book, and there's a little something in it for everybody. Read it and see for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Put it Down!, June 7, 2010

A great read! Just be prepared to devote all your time to it once you begin. The Faculty Club tells the story of Jeremy Davis, a first-year law student at "the greatest law school in the world", who gets involved with a mysterious club whose secrets threaten his life and the lives of those he loves. The novel combines thrills, humor, the supernatural, mind games, and philosophy into a book I could not put down until I had finished the last page.

The author writes vividly and his characters are well-drawn and three dimensional--all people I felt like I knew well by the end of the book. I especially enjoyed the relationship and interactions between Jeremy and Sarah, a medical student he encounters at the Ivy League university he attends.

The plot twists will keep you guessing, the puzzles will make you think, and the moral dilemmas will keep you pondering as to what choices you would make. The book crosses genres between a contemporary mystery and a supernatural thriller, so suspend belief and just go where it takes you--it will be a fun ride! I thought it was a really good read, and I highly recommend it.

I loved this book as it kept me entertained the entire way. I did not want to put it down at all and finished it in three days in my limited time. This book had great mystery and suspense and will teach you many interesting ancient facts along the way. Definitely a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic beach book!, June 2, 2010
I loved this book! It is a fun, fast, easy read, perfect for lazing on the beach or by the pool. It drew me in right away with descriptions of a prestigious ivy league "top law school" and all the lore that goes with it. And then, it propelled me down a crazy supernatural path as the main character gets in way over his head vying for a spot in a dangerous secret society. The plot morphs from believable to fantastical, a la Harry Potter and Twilight. The characters have enough depth to make them interesting, and they're far from perfect, which makes them much more human and sympathetic. I found myself wanting to find out what happened next and finished the book in just a few sittings. An intelligent, fun read!
