Book Description

New Family - New Life - Ancient Evil

When eight year old Solomon and his family move to Birchover village, in Derbyshire, they never realised that the move would change their whole world forever!

After asking his mother's permission to go out, Solomon ventures into the wood at the bottom of his garden.

After walking for some time and finding himself lost, he sees a light quickly approaching. As it stops in front of his face, he instantly recognises it.

A faery!

She introduces herself as Caitlin, and helps him get home. On the way, she tells him of a terrible evil monster that is imprisoned under a tree at the heart of the wood.

Seeing his home, Solomon thanks Caitlin and rushes home to tell his parents of the magic in Birchover Wood.

A few days later, a storm damages the old tree and all the faery elders are worried of the great danger that faces them.

After the storm, Solomon convinces his parents to go into the wood to try and see the magical faeries.

As they venture deeper into the woodland, a faery appears and takes hold of Solomon. Using magic, he transports the two of them to the monster, imprisoned under the tree.

Immediately, the monster takes possession of Solomon and with magic, it leaves its prison to take revenge on those that locked it away.

Standing under the roots of the tree, Solomon, now taken over by the evil, causes the tree to explode. He rises out through the hole and in to the fresh air of the wood.

He faces an army of dragons, boggarts, faeries and other mythical creatures that have been summoned to fight.

The mythical creatures must destroy the evil inside Solomon, but also save him before it is to late.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming Children's Fairytale April 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a charming children's fairytale about a young 8 yr old boy and his adventures with the fairies and something dark and dangerous that lurks in the woods behind his house. Solomon is the main character and he is an excitable little boy. He is lucky enough to have a loving mum and dad. The author wrote likeable and 'real' characters that I could relate to.

If I had children of my own this would have been a great story to read to them before bed. It started off a bit slow, as most 1st-in-a-series books do when the author is 'world-building', but hang in there, as the story starts to move right along the further you get into it and I found it hard to put down.

The author was able to create a very descriptive 'other world' in the woods and was able to transport me there with his writing. I also enjoyed the very creative names he came up with for the fairies and mythical creatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fiction! March 21, 2013

Little Solomon is sick. It seems that the city air is not good for him.

His parents, Dave and Sarah, decide to move the family to a little town. They are sure this will help the 8 year old boy get better.

The little ancient town of Birchover seems like the perfect place for the young family, who doesn’t know anything about the dark history and villains lurking around the place.

Solomon's health gets better but at the same time, unknowingly, he becomes a critical piece on the chess game that The Bad is playing against the Faeries of Birchover Wood.

Unfortunately, Dave and Sarah do not seem to have the proper tools or knowledge to help Solomon win the fight for his live: they do not even believe in Faeries. Not even when another grownup, Winnie, tells them that the Faeries are for real, do they start believing.

The Bad is coming back and neither Man, Myth nor Folklore seem to be ready to fight against it. What can a little boy do? Can he become the difference in a battle originally fought by King and Dragon? Will Solomon be able to finish a war that has been tearing our planet apart for hundreds of years?

In one single question: Is little Solomon up to the fight against The Bad?

There is only one way to find out.

Written by the talented Ian Rutter as a present for his son Solomon this book is loaded with free goodies: photos of the real Birchover Town (yes, it is real), a good historical review about The Nine Ladies Stone Circle, an alternate ending to book one and a preview into book two of the series are some of the things that you can calmly enjoy after fighting a long, long war with little Solomon and the King of England.

If you enjoyed the classical Narnia books, and have been looking for something similar since, we recommend that you check the books of The Faeries of Birchover Wood, by Ian Rutter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Work for kids and adults August 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ian Rutter's writing strikes a chord with both children and adults in The Faeries of Birchover Wood, Book 1. The Bad is very very Bad, and in the first part of the book, we learn how bad it is, and how the many beings we now consider "mythical," with the help of people, captured and imprisoned the Bad, because it couldn't be killed. The names of the faeries, goblins, and other creatures are pure delight; I don't want to give them away, so read it yourself and smile along with the names of each magical character, and the name of what it is!

The next part starts in our time, and introduces young Solomon, who meets a faery in the woods around his new home. At first no one, except an elderly lady who knows about them too, believes him. But he takes his parents into the woods, and they too meet the Faeries of the Wood. The Faeries are worried; things seem to be going wrong. Most of them remember the story of the Bad, because Faeries love stories (almost as much as children do!). And bad creatures who are connected to The Bad are afoot in the woods too.

I don't want to throw in spoilers, but let's just say that Solomon has a big job ahead of him, for on his shoulders may rest the fate of the world. Brilliantly edited and beautifully illustrated, The Faeries of Birchover Wood is a book for everyone. And I hope a sequel appears very very soon.
