This book is constantly reprinted and it's no wonder. We first used it in an (authentic) high school CCD program in the mid- 1970's. Its simple, straightforward style, depth and clarity have me coming back to it every 4 years or so for a "refresher" on the basics of the Roman Catholic faith. This book is a must for anyone who wants to know why he exists, where he is going, who God is, etc., in addition to the nuts and bolts of Mother Church. I read a lot in this area--in addition to apologetics and all the usual suspects in that area and this book is a stand out and has stood the test of time. I'm ordering more because I'm always giving them away to all sorts of people and I never get "negative" feedback--it's always completely positive. A very readable book!

Very easy to understand and will answer numerous questions regarding Catholic faith. It should be required reading for all believers of the Bible, for it explains it in an easier way, leaving no room for speculations or assumptions. Highly recommended...

When I was given this book I thought there was no way an author could explain the Christian faith very well in a single book of this size. Then I read the first few pages, and the language was non-academic and easy to understand, so I thought there's REALLY no way the author could do a decent job expaining the faith.
But the Holy Spirit works in mysterious ways! This book works through biblical text and gives creative analogies, making the often hard-to-understand mysteries of the Catholic faith reachable for a layman like myself. If you want to understand the Catholic faith, READ THIS BOOK!

I've owned this book now for about 3 years and have read it through all the way, once. I've gone back to sections for refresher information, many, many times. What I like the most about this book is, if you do not have the capacity (time, or stamina) to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) all the way through - this is an excellent way to get "more than the basics" of what is in the CCC in a very clear, concise manner.

From the very first page (just like all catechisms of the Catholic church) it starts with the three fundamental questions. Who made me? Who is God? Why did God make me? Just that first page will have you hooked and you will not want to put it down. I constantly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 13 because it is that clear in it's method of explaining the faith. I do not believe this book is for anyone looking for a "dumbed down" version of the faith, and by that I do not mean there is anything wrong with the book written by Fr. Tregilio called "Catholicism for Dummies." Quiet the contrary, these two books are just for different types of readers.

Another interesting observation on this book is the different kind of people that love it. I have met such different personalities and ages of people (13 to 79) who love this book that I think that fact is also a recommendation of the book.

Read it, it's good for answering all your questions AND will untangle any misconceptions you have developed along the way, or just remind you of what you may have forgotten.

I highly and unreservedly recommend this book.

I like this book because it explains in very simple terms all of the important aspects of our catholic faith. I grew up as a catholic and went to catholic school but the information from this book has given me hundred times more knowledge of my faith that what I had learned in school. I highly recommend it. It's a long book but well worth your time.

This book is unparallelled in explaining the Catholic Faith. Easy to read, easy to understand, very deep and very spiritual. After reading this book, if you do not understand why the Catholic Church believes and teaches what it does, then there is no hope for you to ever understand the truths of the Church. Best book I have ever read. Easy to travel and carry with you. Buy TWO, one to keep and one to give away.

I became a Catholic about 12 years ago mostly because I married a Catholic. Finally, after 12 years of searching, I've found the one reference book that has answered all of my questions about the Catholic faith. Now I understand WHY we Catholics believe what we believe, and my faith will never be the same. This is a must read for any Catholic searching for answers or any Protestant wanting to become a part of Christ's Mystical Body.

If you are looking for a well-written, whole-picture explanation of the Faith--an explanation that is at once thorough, well-written and easily digestible--this is the book. TFE is highly accessible and well-written. The book is extraordinarily compact, having much more inside than you'd have thought by glancing at it on the shelf. In tone and content, it is neither "fluffy", like certain modern Catholic books, nor "scary" like certain books published by Tan. The author makes no bones about the horror of mortal sin, of even deliberate venial sin nor even does he suggest that Hell is something only Hitler, Stalin and the like have to be worried about. On the other hand, because he anticipates the worries and concerns of his Catholic readers--he is writing for Catholics, first and foremost--he covers everything in a way that is ultimately encouraging to those who, with the help of grace, are willing to try their best to "put on Christ" and put to death "the old man".

The following quote is a good representation of what's so great about this book:
"If we do 'what in us lies' by regular prayer, frequent confession and Holy Communion; by recalling often what a grand thing it is to have God himself dwelling within us, what a glorious thing to know that at whatever moment God may call us, we are ready to open our eyes upon him in eternity (even though purgatory may come first); if we keep ourselves occupied with useful work and wholesome play, and avoid persons, places and things which might put a strain on our human weakness--then there can be no doubt about our victory."

Now that's the Good News!

However, the books explanations of all technical matters are wonderful as well. I love the section on the Trinity! I love the explanation of Original Sin!
