Book Description

Rafe Turner has a tattoo running from his wrist to his shoulder. His hair is a little too long. He doesn't need to rebel, because owning his life is already in his blood. He's way out of her league, for sure, but when Lily Gardner accidentally face plants through the window of his band's practice room, a connection is formed between Rafe and Lily that can't be shaken. When Rafe invites her to jam with his band, Lily knows the mega-talented drummer is exactly what she needs to fix her life. The fact that Rafe already has a girlfriend? No problem. It'll be enough if people simply think she's dating him…won't it? Lily is about to discover that finding her passion is a whole lot more complicated than a fake boyfriend…or two.

"Stop, drop and rock-n-roll....Stephanie Rowe has created the new teen queen with Lily Gardner! THE FAKE BOYFRIEND EXPERIMENT gets under your skin, like a pop song on the radio, you find yourself wanting to go back to it over and over!" ~Guilty Indulgence Book Club

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh YA Novel! April 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It's been a while since I read a book that was purely YA without a paranormal twist. And why oh why did I stop! The Fake Boyfriend Experiment reminded me why I really enjoy an escape into the world of YA. I'm an high school English teacher, and as such, I've always tried to read as much YA fiction as I can so that I can discuss, recommend and encourage young people to read. And most definitely this will be one of my recommendations.

The book immediately establishes Lily as an intelligent young woman who is musically gifted. Obviously there are drawbacks to such a gift; it tends to impact on your social life which is somewhat of a drag when you're a teenager!
Lily however is by no means the 'geek' that she constantly fears becoming; rather she is great fun and her story is so enjoyable to read. Her wit and humour was wonderfully developed by Stephanie Rowe, so much so that I scared my dog a few times by laughing out loud.

What was refreshing with the way that Lily's character was crafted was the sense of realism that followed her thought process and behaviour. Her fears, her dreams and her goals were honest and very relevant to today's teens which is one of the many reasons why I think YA is so very important. I felt myself cringing at times as the storyline developed and the plot truly 'thickened', simply because I remember making so many mistakes as a teenager and reacted to situations in sometimes the most random and bizarre of ways. I was able to identify with her; it really did bring me back to being a teenager.

And of course there's the cool and cute Rafe. I hope every young woman gets to meet a Rafe in their lives. He's exactly what I hoped a potential love interest would be for a YA and more specifically for Lily. And once again, what was so refreshing, was that Stephanie Rowe didn't crumble and fall for cliche. She handled and shaped their relationship with creativity and with what I think is a clear positive message to young women.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it!!! May 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After being charmed by the free chapter, I immediately downloaded the rest of this story and proceeded to read it the rest of the afternoon with a smile on my face. It was so cute and endearing watching Lily fall for the drummer Rafe, only to temporarily mess it up with the goof-ball Les. It was so typical of ridiculous high school antics to fit in that you couldn't help loving Lily's bungling and totally understanding her desire to be cool.

Lily was a classical piano child prodigy who wasn't living up to her potential. What started out as fun had lost its luster and was now agony. As a truce with her mother and piano instructor, Lily was given a month off to perform with a local bad that had a very hot drummer named Rafe. Unfortunately, Lily was replacing Rafe's girlfriend Paige at the keyboard and causing all kinds of problems for him as he couldn't help but admire her musical abilities and fun personality. Lily, stressed that she no longer fit in with her girlfriends, lied and said she was dating Rafe then lied to Rafe and said she was dating a high school football player named Les. Lily and Rafe's chemistry made it hard for them to remain faithful to their "partners" and then Lily's lies come out one night when everyone is present and her lies mortify her. Just when she thinks she has lost everyone in her life that matters, she finds that she is not the loser she believed she was.

This is a fun, fast paced romance that has all the awkwardness of first love and tender moments of discovering who you are apart from your parent's ideals for you. It was predictable, yet lighthearted and made for a fun afternoon read.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (2.99)
Would I read it again? Possibly
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

4.0 out of 5 stars Beta Reader April 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm not usually a fan of the Young Adult genre, but this was a very refreshing, no nonsense take on what really happens to young girls trying to fit in at school.
Stephanie asked me to Beta Read for her, and while I was waiting to receive her next edition in the Order of the Blade series, would I mind reading this book.
What a pleasant surprise. I actually found myself impatiently waiting to receive the next chapters of the book each time I finished what had been sent.
This is a great teen novel, and unlike a lot of others out there, it's not trying to emulate someone else's idea, just simply telling it like it REALLY is!!!
Great work Stephanie, and even though I've already had the pleasure of reading this story, I bought a copy for my bookshelf.
I have a few granddaughters come up to their teens after all!!!
