Book Description

During the spring of 1536 in Tudor England, events conspire to bring down Anne Boleyn, the Queen of England. The coup against the Queen results in the brutal executions of six innocent people - Anne Boleyn herself, her brother, and four courtiers - and the rise of a new Queen.

Drawing on sixteenth century letters, eye witness accounts and chronicles, Claire Ridgway leads the reader through the sequence of chilling events one day at a time, telling the true story of Anne Boleyn's fall. The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown is presented in a diary format, allowing readers to dip in, look up a particular date, or read from start to finish. Special features include mini biographies of those involved, a timeline of events and full referencing.
  • Why was Anne Boleyn executed?
  • Who was responsible for Anne Boleyn's fall?
  • Was Anne Boleyn's execution a foregone conclusion and was she framed?
Claire Ridgway, creator of The Anne Boleyn Files website and best-selling author of The Anne Boleyn Collection, continues her mission to share the real truth about Anne Boleyn.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"With this book, Ridgway gives Queen Anne Boleyn the justice she was denied almost 500 years ago. She has performed a service for history." - Jeane Westin, Author of His Last Letter: Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester

"...Claire has somehow managed to synthesize all the facts associated with the coup against Anne and the Boleyn faction in 1536, and presented it in a a hugely readable and concise format that deserves applause...A great addition to any Anne Boleyn fan's book shelves!" - Sarah Morris, Author of Le Temps Viendra: A Novel of Anne Boleyn

From the Author

The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown is a guide to the chain of events leading up to Anne Boleyn's execution on the 19th May 1536. I chose a diary format so that the information was easily digestible and so that readers can dip into it and find out what happened on a specific date, or read in its entirety to see the tragic events unfold. I include full references and a bibliography (on the book website for the Kindle version) so that readers can also do their own research or check facts.

I have ploughed my way through many books about Anne Boleyn and her spectacular fall in 1536. Many of those books were brilliant, some not so brilliant. Among the best are authors and historians such as Eric Ives whose biography of Anne is superb.
When I first heard about this book I wondered what would be so different about it that would make it stand out when so many books have already been written about Anne. I read it with a completely open mind, while wondering what I would gain from it. What I discovered was that I gained an enormous amount from it. Let's make it clear that this look at Anne's fall is not intended as an attempt to replicate what has gone before. Ives' biography of Anne, while superb, is not for a novice or the feint hearted! This is an entirely different approach to the subject. It is intended to be a clear, concise and easily digestible reference for Anne's fall, which I think achieves it's primary purpose.
It sets out a day to day diary of events building up to Anne's execution in May 1536, setting out details of the main characters involved. Most importantly of all it does so using all of the original source material available, with explanatory commentary by the author, Claire Ridgway. All angles of the story are looked at and researched, and all possible causes of the tragedy are investigated and dissected. But although Claire gives her personal views, backed up with compelling and logical argument, she makes it clear that the story is open to different interpretations, meaning we as readers are allowed our own opinions, whilst fully appreciating the logic behind the writer's views.
The greatest achievement of this book is that if you are a complete novice to the story of Anne Boleyn then you will feel, after reading it, that you will be able to talk with confidence about the subject. Yet even if you are not a novice to the story then you will find everything you know, or thought you knew, is contained here in what is a comprehensive, while readable look at the story of Anne's fall.
I think that's what makes this book so unique and so worth reading. It gives all of the information you need to know in order to understand Anne's fall, leaving out nothing, but it does so in a way that I don't think has been achieved before i.e. in a way that anyone can read and enjoy with ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a book I have wished for! May 9, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Fall of Anne Boleyn, A Countdown, by Claire Ridgway, is a detailed and often erie, day to day account of the events that lead up to the execution of Anne Boleyn. It also includes an entry about the faith of those who survived those dark days, as well as poetry inspired by the turmoil of May 1536. What I loved in particular, other than now having a superbly detailed reference book, is the human factor Claire brings to her writing. The gradual build up to the inevitable outcome is tragic as it is, but the back stories, the insight into family ties and personal allegiances of those involved, breathes life into history. She opens doors into the court of Henry VIII and gives us access to the struggles and challenges of Anne's life as queen, even before her arrest. Her description of Anne Boleyn's last days and ultimately her execution are nothing but heartbreaking. One starts to understand the political atmosphere of a time where being in the King's favor meant everything and how being on the outside could be of detriment. One can feel the undertow of the power struggles within the court, see the subtle clues of strategic minds plotting behind the scenes, and not only watch this tragedy unfold, but see the day to day events of how it happened and how it affected so many lives.
Claire's dedication to her research mainly through primary sources, and also through the works of prominent contemporary historians is evident in all her work. Her web site [...] and [...], speak for themselves, as does her first book "The Anne Boleyn Collection, " which is another treasure throve of information and interesting reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource May 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first read the Kindle edition and I liked how the information was presented in a diary format so much that I purchased a paperback copy also. There has been a lot of information written on Anne Boleyn but this author is the the first one I've seen to rely on Primary sources( contemporary records of that time)so faithfully. Claire Ridgway obviously has put a great deal of time and effort into her research and it shows. She presents the material in a clear, easily understood way and because it is in a diary format, you can see what was happening on any particular day during the months preceding Anne's execution. I read it cover to cover and I enjoyed it very much. I added the paperback version to my collection and I know I will use it many times to come. I very much recommend this book to all Tudor fans and if you haven't read it, Claire's first book, "The Truth about Anne Boleyn", was also wonderful as it dispels many popular myths about Anne Boleyn. I'm a great fan of her website, The Anne Boleyn Files, also. Enjoy, everyone!
