Book Description

Dr. Ted Duffy has finally met a woman who makes him ache with desire. Too bad she’s dating his best friend of twenty years. This simple premise has momentous consequences for Ted in “The Fall,” a story that explores the bonds of friendship, the expectations of family, and the power of love to unite and divide. Ted is a third-generation pediatric oncologist in Boston. He is thirty-seven years old, married to his work, and considers his patients to be “his kids.” He and his friends spend summer weekends in Newport, Rhode Island, which is the only break Ted allows himself from the grind of his job. After a devastating loss at work, he leaves for Newport where he meets his friend’s new girlfriend, Caroline. Over that first weekend, Ted and Caroline fall in love. When they later act on their feelings, shock and disbelief ricochet through his tight-knit group of friends and family. A highly respected doctor, a beloved son and grandson, a loyal friend, Ted is stunned by his sudden free fall from grace.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book was inspired by a ride into Newport, Rhode Island, one busy summer evening in 2006. A man driving a black Mercedes convertible was in traffic next to me, and on his Massachusetts license plate were his initials plus MD. I wondered where the handsome doctor could be going. The Fall is my answer to that question. As I developed the character of Ted, a pediatric oncologist, I realized I needed some day-in-the-life details to make his character more authentic. During an Internet search, I discovered a blog by Dr. Samuel Blackman, at the time a pediatric oncologist at Children's Hospital Boston. The similarities between Sam's story and the back story I had already given Ted were startling, to say the least. Sam generously allowed me to borrow anecdotes from his blog that added so much to this story. For that as well as his friendship and support, I'm truly grateful.
Thank you Christina Camara, Julie Cupp, Paula Del Bonis-Platt and Lisa Ridder, who read the early drafts and provided invaluable feedback. Alyson Hackett and Ronlyn Howe read the most recent version, and I thank them for the excellent insight that made The Fall a better book.
To all the readers who have made my author journey so rewarding, I'm eternally indebted to you. Your friendship has been one of the great gifts in my life.
To Dan, Emily, Jake, Brandy, and Dad, I love you best of all.
xoxo
Marie

1.0 out of 5 stars slo-mo train wreck March 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I have no idea how a book that had such a promising premise and a great set up derailed so incredibly for me as I was reading. And 'derailed' is a good term because I felt like I was 'reading' a slo-mo trainwreck. That sounds hyperbolic and I don't mean it to be. But the story just started to unravel in so many ways for me that until the end I did not like, in any way, a single character in this book.

Now, I have read a few of Marie Force's books. Some I've really liked and some that didn't work for me in small ways, but not to an extent that I've actively disliked them. I do enjoy her writing because I think she writes messy stories. By that I mean, she doesn't always color within the lines in a genre that sometimes feel it is one formula after the other. I respect that. But this book simply can't be put in the win column for me.

**********SPOILERS GALORE********************THIS REVIEW IS ONE BIG SPOILER************************************

First I have to say that every character in the book succumbed to one of two ailments: Big A$$ Whiny Baby syndrome (BAWBS) or Super Self Righteousness-itis (SSR). Not one person remained immune.

As I mentioned above the set up and premise is really a good one. Ted Duffy is a pediatric oncologist who comes from a super awesome family and has four of the best friends ever. The guys, Ted, Parker, Smitty and Chip, have all grown up together and have known each other forever. They have a summer house they share and one weekend Smitty brings Caroline, a woman he had been dating for only a few weeks. When Ted and Caroline meet they fall instantly in love. For Ted, Caroline is THE ONE. And he's heartsick that she is Smitty's girl. For Caroline Ted also brought the lightning bolt of love.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic February 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really never bought this story at all.

** SPOILER **

First of all, these are grown men. While I can understand Smitty being upset with having his girlfriend of a couple of months 'stolen' by his best friend, even though she was his CASUAL girlfriend of 2 months (no not fiance, not wife, never said I LOVE YOU's to each other although Smitty 'thought' she might be 'the one'). But I was definitely NOT buying the other 2 friends' treatment of Duff - they basically treated him like he was dirt and refused to talk to him. Really??? Women behaving like this - maybe - but grown, heterosexual men in their 30s choosing sides and getting snotty with their lifelong friend because he fell in love with another man's girlfriend. COME ON!

Supposedly these were all intelligent (Princeton grads), successful, professionals yet they never had an intelligent discussion about the situation - not once. They just acted like whiny girlfriends. Not buying it.

Secondly, if Duff and Caroline were really so in love with each other (saying I love you every other sentence), how could Duffy leave Caroline (his wife of a few weeks), move, take another job, and remove his ring - all within a matter of weeks and all because his boyfriends and his mommy were mad at him. And what's with his mother choosing Smitty over her son, a son she supposedly loved without question? Once again, did not buy it.

Finally, Duff and Caroline are thrown together at Smitty's wedding party - Smitty forgives all, the men all kiss and make up (BTW...WAY TO MUCH MALE CRYING IN THIS BOOK), and the men forgive Duff and Caroline.

3.0 out of 5 stars started strong...then fizzled **some spoilers** August 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't put this book down at first, it really started out strong. I'm not sure when it started to fizzle though. I know that all of the "love at first sight" thing was a little too much. For something that only happens once every blue moon, it happened to everyone in this book. It was overkill for me. All of the male crying was a little too much also. I've never read a book where all the men cried at the drop of a hat, not realistic. I didn't like how Ted's mom reacted to the situation, it seemed out of character for her. I hated how Lillian and/or Theo didn't step in to tell their story to Ted's parents, so that history didn't repeat itself. The way that Mitzi & Caroline made up was unrealistic too. Out of the blue Mitzi believes their love is true, because she sees a list? Caroline should have made Mitzi grovel a little bit. Caroline didn't even make Ted grovel at all. Even though he left after all the promises he made, she just took him back. I would have put him through the wringer to come back home. I like quite a few Marie Force books, but this one fell flat for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from Marie Force..... January 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a big Marie Force fan, and this e-book is another reason why. Book was well written, riveting, full of emotions that kept you captivated. I couldn't seem to put it down. Book is about four best friends who have known each other for over 20 years and were like brothers. Every summer, they rented a house where they would all gather on weekends and spend it together. Ted and Chip were doctors, Parker was a divorce lawyer and Smitty was a stockbroker. They were all successful in their own way. This summer, things were different as Smitty brought his new girlfriend Caroline. The first time Ted saw Caroline, he knew he was in love with her; it was love at first sight and he knew she felt the same way about him. Admitting his feelings would not only destroy his friendship with Smitty, but also with his other friends Parker and Chip and his own family. Story goes through all the dilemma-drama he and Caroline have to face in order to pursue their feelings for each other. It also included stories about Parker, Chip and Smitty and how they got their happily ever after. Secondary characters were fantastic and a bonus to this great story.

It was a wonderful story, full of emotions; covering a wide range of topics from family value, family relationships, true love, honesty, loyalty, friendships, loss of life, sacrifices...it had me smiling, balling and everything in between!

It was fantastic and once again a sure read! Looking forward to her next book!
