Editorial Reviews

Review

“Many people cook to entertain, but this book will entertain while you cook. Longtime and last Fallingwater cook Elsie Henderson fills the pages with delectable recipes and lively anecdotes.”
—Western Pennsylvania History

“The exterior of Wright's architectural wonder, Fallingwater, is recognized throughout the world, but less is known about the interior life of this famous house. Now, through the wonderful recipes of Elsie Henderson, we come to know something about the tastes and hospitality of the people who lived there. In this enlightening book, food communicates the nature of the cook as well as the family and guests who were privileged to dine within this extraordinary place.”
--Barbara Haber, author, From Hardtack to Homefries: An Uncommon History of American Cooks and Meals

As a huge fan of both Frank Lloyd Wright and especially Falling Water, and having visited the home many glorious times, I loved reading all the little tidbits about both the Kaufmann family and their famous house. If you are the type that wishes you could see the rooms they DON'T show you on house tours, you will enjoy the behind-the-scenes recollections of the Kaufmann's longtime cook. And if you love food, and have a nostalgia for "party" food of the 50s and 60s like I do, you will find yourself lost in her recipes.

My only criticism is that the recipes at the end of the book, supplied by the co-authors, are not complementary to the earlier ones.
They rely on overly complicated techniques and are a bit ostentatious next to the lovely, simple, honesty of the original Falling Water recipes which so often used fresh, seasonal and local foods. I am pretending that the end of the book simply does not exist, since the rest of the book is delightful as it stands.

I tried the Pumpkin Soup for my Thanksgiving Dinner. It was the perfect way to start my dinner. It was easy to make and could be prepared in advance which really helped with the flurry of activities on Thanksgiving Day. The directions were easy to follow. The ingredients were a little bit unique which made the soup tasty and interesting. My guest were impressed - I felt like a real chef. I am looking forward to trying other things from the book. I especially like the pictures!

Elsie Henderson, Chef Bob Sendall and I (retired Pittsburgh Post-Gazette food editor Suzanne Martinson) are thrilled to have "The Fallingwater Cookbook" available as an eBook. With the help of photographer Linda Mitzel, we have added a dozen photos, including Elsie's 100th birthday parties in September 2013. The color photos of the farm-to-table foods add to the delight of eating like the avant-garde Kaufmanns, the Pittsburgh department store family who owned -- and loved -- the famed house above the waterfall designed for them by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Elsie, who cooked there for more than 15 years, continues to revisit that magical place with so many memories of her life there. Go for the delicious, foolproof, kitchen-tested recipes, and stay for Elsie's wonderful stories of cooking for the rich and famous of Western Pennsylvania. We can't help but love this book. We think you will, too.

I actually bought this because I am such a Falling Water/ Frank LLoyd Wright fan. I found the accompaning stories to be a fun and interesting contribution to the book. Things that no one other than those having intimite knowlege of the Kauffman family would know. The recipies themselves are wonderful. With a glimse into pre and post depression cooking in the US. ,especially those of a southern home and self taught cook.they are sometimes very simple and others more difficult than I would have expected. The contributing Chefs concoctions are also very good.

I recently purchased four copies of the The Fallingwater Cookbook to give as Christmas gifts. My daughter took them to a signing held at the University of Pittsburgh and got not only Elsie Henderson's signature but also Suzanne Martinson's. I live near Fallingwater and have visited several times. The stories in the book take on new meaning when you visit the home. I know my friends will really enjoy trying the recipes. I should have ordered one for myself!!!!! Marilyn from Uniontown, PA

After sending this cookbook as a gift, I received a call giving me praises for sending such a wonderful cookbook. She is an avid cook and always looking for new recipes and was also fascinated with Fallingwater. She said the recipes were great and the pictures and backround information about Fallingwater and the people who had lived there were an added bonus. She said it was the best gift I have ever given her!

The title is Recipes and Memories. By far, the best part of the book is the memories of Elsie Henderson and the Kaufmanns. The recipes are fine for what they purport to be - the everyday food served at Falling Waters. An exception, is Clove Cake - a not to be forgotten culinary experience! A beautifyly photographed book. Makes me want to visit Falling Waters.

Bought this as a gift for my sister, who loves Fallingwater. We grew up not far from there, but now live far across the country. So we know the history and all the gossip about this house. Visited it many times, so this book was a treat for her. Doubt if she will ever make any of the recipes but she does enjoy the stories and pictures that are included.
