As somebody else had mentioned in a review, Lady Gaga's image and gimmick suggests that her music should be edgier and darker, or as edgy and dark, as her "avant-garde" fashion statements. I like what she's going for with it, but the music she delivers is just flat and lackluster, bolstered by more hype and crazy costumes than substance.

The thing that makes it more irritating is that Lady Gaga IS talented, she has the voice, she has the stage presence, and the creativity to really produce amazing pieces of pop music. She can create a great hit single, but not a fabulous album. Her albums feel to me like they're filled with filler, with the best songs being the singles we've already heard on the radio and one or two hidden gems that truly showcase her vocals and piano skills. The Fame Monster is no different. I only liked 4/8 songs on the album (Bad Romance, Speechless, Dance in the Dark, and Teeth). Bad Romance is just a great pop dance song. Speechless is a surprise gem that really showcases her talent; it makes me wish that she did more music like this instead of relying so heavily on the overproduced, over saturated techno and electric sound that drowns out her voice in 95% of her songs. I liked the sound of Dance in the Dark; my only complaint about it is that I wish she could stop with the whole religious undertones, not because it's offensive or even shocking, but because it comes off as a cheap attempt at trying to be "edgy" a la Madonna, plus the religious undertone is just unnecessary (and lately, with Born This Way, it's starting to become a cheap crutch). Teeth was just fun and cheeky. The rest of the songs on The Fame Monster were either completely forgettable and useless (Monster, So Happy I Could Die), annoying (Telephone), or cheesy (Alejandro. Sorry, it sounds like a rip off of Madonna's La Isla Bonita). Sometimes I couldn't help but feel that some of her songs sound a little too similar to Madonna, which further makes Lady Gaga seem less of an artist and instead a wannabe, imitation of artists she admires.

I don't love this record as much as other people did. I think The Fame better showcased her talent, creativity, and yes, even the over the top gimmick of being an over the top "fame hungry" monster, worked to her benefit, but it was done in such a creative, fun, un-forced, genuine way. The Fame Monster showed that she still had more to offer, but the image/gimmick is now starting to take over and overshadow her talent. Then there's Born This Way....I won't even go there.

I give it 1 star because I felt like this album could have been better than what it was praised at being. I think Lady Gaga, in general, can do better.

The Fame was excellent but the Fame Monster is Gaga's best work.

Well, I received my picture disc yesterday and, sure enough, it arrived damaged. This corroborates the experience of other reviewers here who have complained of poor handling by Amazon. The disc itself is intact, but the clear plastic sleeve it came in is severely damaged: split open on one side, chipped on another, and curved on yet another from having been stuffed into a too-small shipping box. Not a big deal to some --and I understand that-- but to a collector like me, it's unacceptable. I mean, really...is it so hard to notice that the box you chose to ship my product in is too small?

This means I have to go through the whole needless process of having to return this and wait for them to send me another one. Hopefully, they'll get a clue and package it in a way so it'll arrive in good condition.

UPDATE: As of today, 02/25/10, Amazon has repeatedly mishandled this order: boxes too big, boxes too small, item not properly restrained within the boxes. I am now waiting on my FIFTH replacement for this item. As with the first order described above, each subsequent order has reached me with the plastic sleeve split on at least three sides and severely cracked. I have contacted the customer service department, and have been told twice that a warehouse "bin check" would be done. At this point, the folks in charge of that section of the warehouse are either absolutely incompetent or someone is having a great laugh at my expense.

In any case, if this latest shipment arrives damaged, I'll admit defeat, Amazon will have won, and I'll just go buy it elsewhere. Nice way to treat customers, huh?

Im giving this one star because the album is edited, and the site said NOTHING about it being edited. It's an amzing album but I will be returning it and buying one elsewhere that isn't censored!
