First off, I love the idea of a Bible focusing on family Bible study. I like that it uses the NIV, the most used modern language in America. However, as I was scanning and planning devotions with my grandkids, I found that I had a difference of opinion with the study notes on Noah's Ark. Our family believes in a Young Earth, and the notes are obviously the views of someone with an Old Earth belief.
Now I know that I will have to fully read any notes in order to not confuse the children with information that contradicts what we believe and what they learn at school. It is completely unnecessary to use information on which there is controversy ( the million years concepts) within the format of a family study Bible.
The Family Study Bible is a lovely gift, and the concept is wonderful. Just be aware that the study notes may reflect particular beliefs that have nothing to do with the Bible.

"Use CAUTION when selecting and reading this Bible. We were excited to find a Bible that had devotions for multiple ages that could grow with our family. The layout is well thought developed and we are enjoying using this Bible during our family devotion time. However, when we came to the story of Noah, we were disturbed to find that the commentary is compromised by including an Old Earth Creation view. On page 8 it reads, "We don't know how many years passed after the creation of the world to the time of Noah. It may have been thousands of years; it may have been millions." It GREATLY concerns me that a controversial belief is embraced in the lesson and treated as a valid interpretation. I am thankful that I was able to look ahead and edit this before reading it out loud to my young children. How confusing it would be to them for me to teach them something and the "bible" to tell them something else. I now wonder how many other lessons I will have to edit, or if I should have to read a day ahead to prevent a disaster of biblical proportions from occurring in our family devotion time.I wanted to warn others of this before they purchase this Bible." Melissa R on Christianbooks.com. I found this helpful.

I should preface this with the fact that while our family is religious and we are practicing Episcopals, we are not typically the type to read a bible daily. This is with the exception of reading daily devotionals (the adults) and reading kid-friendly bible stories when the kids were younger.

Now that our children are older (early teens and up) they have outgrown the children's works, but are not at the point of completely understanding a standard bible. To be honest, neither am I. I think this is why I immediately LOVED this concept. Now, I can read with the kids and have answers to their questions (and mine) right there on the page along with the scripture. It turns a simple passage reading into something much more.

The design is very reader friendly, not childish at all, yet it speaks simply to the reader by providing interesting facts, asking thought-provoking questions and leading us to further reading related to the topic elsewhere in the bible. The stories are linked in chronological order to provide an even clearer understanding of the progression, which makes so much more sense to me in seeing the passages come together as a "story".

Each page has the following:

*A quick review of the topic (what is going on at this point in the bible)

*A section called "Just the Facts" (questions you should be able to answer after reading the passage, to gauge understanding of what was read)

*A section called "Let's Talk" (thought provoking questions, the type to ask what the reader would do in a similar situation, etc.

Without a doubt I think that this is the best Bible concept ever that I have found. Start (and keep) a family tradition of reading the Bible together. How important that is! Yet, then how often do you find people that really keep to it? In my own Bible study, I'm a little her and there and everywhere reading what is currently applying to me and my interests. The children in our lives are so important and guiding them to grow in a family of faith that knows their Bible is so valuable. As the back cover states the fact: Maintaining your kids' interest in family Bible reading can be difficult for any parent. Where to start? How to keep them interested? How to connect it all to everyday life?

Welcome to your family's guided tour of the Bible.

Including the great maps that you find in most Zondervan Bibles, this Bible already is a great educational tool. There is also a table of weights and measures, a Path Index, Off the Beaten Path Index, and a Topical and Feature Index that all make this Bible very user friendly. Written in a New International Version translation, the words of scripture are relevant to today's language and will be understood by your children and yourself.

Something I love is the dedication page, unlike any other. "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." -Joshua 24:15 This Bible belongs to the _____ Family, occasion & date. So powerful. A family Bible. These days you often hear about individual's Bibles, but hardly a family Bible, but if you look into genealogy research one of the greatest first person sources is a family Bible. I love the idea of a family Bible. In the front there is also a few pages to write family traditions and spiritual milestones.
