Review

Cartoonist Gary Larson may have retired, but his work is good enough to revisit time and again. It doesn't matter that you've seen many of these cartoons before- they continue to refract the wider world. Hotels should put Larson collections on bedside tables. Here you will find entertainment- and of course laughter. ABERDEEN EVENING EXPRESS What can one say about a Gary Larson annual except "Thank goodness he's still producing them?" JERSEY EVENING POST --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

The Far Side was syndicated in more than 1,900 daily newspapers from 1980 to 1995, when Gary Larson retired. During its run, the cartoon spawned 22 books from AMP, which were translated into a total of 17 different languages. For his work with The Far Side, Larson was awarded the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist from the National Cartoonists Society in 1991 and 1994. The group also named The Far Side Best Syndicated Panel in both 1985 and 1987.

Format: Paperback
Every one of Gary Larson's books has been a work of twisted genius, and "The Far Side Gallery 4" continues that tradition. A collection of hundreds of Larson's distinctive cartoons, this book will sometimes shock, sometimes mystify, but always amuse.
Larson's overall vision is a bizarre, yet oddly coherent blend of fantasy, science fiction, horror, theological speculation, anthropological/zoological observation, and cultural criticism, all distilled through the mind of a master parodist. His trademark technique--the anthropomorphization of the unexpected--is on abundant display in "Gallery 4." Larson's is a world in which squirrels read newspapers, alien juvenile delinquents abuse human astronauts, tapeworms go on vacation, bowling pins hold cocktail parties, and buzzards give poetry readings.
Larson will take on the most taboo subject in order to get a laugh, and he usually succeeds--often brilliantly. Trichinosis, obesity, conjoined twins, suicide, political protest, Native American culture, cryogenics, suffocation, old age, serial killers--nothing is off limits in "Gallery 4." Larson even makes fun of his own cartoon series.
Another of the pleasures of reading "The Far Side Gallery 4" is the fact that you never know who you'll run into next. Larson's deranged imagination captures a whole host of fictional and historical figures: Albert Einstein, Humpty Dumpty, Tito Puente, Dr. Jekyll, Stephen King, and many, many more. When the floating head of Zsa Zsa Gabor threatens the crew of the starship "Enterprise," you know you're in Larson territory.
The short foreword by Robin Williams (he describes Larson's vision as "a National Geographic special on Prozac") is an added bonus to this collection. For fans of "The Far Side," this is an indispensable collection; for those who haven't yet sampled the insane genius of Gary Larson, this is a great introduction.

Update 2014 - Yes I'm aware that Amazon for some reason has combined both this Far Side Gallery 4 product page with the next book Far Side Gallery 5 and reviews for both products are being mixed together confusing some people who don't realise Amazon's error. Both books are great but to prevent someone buying the wrong book based on any information in my review I have edited this review to clearly outline which book is being reviewed. This review was obviously written for Gallery 4 but I have added a review of Gallery 5 at the bottom as well, since I own both. A tip if you're reading anyone's reviews on this page and they mention a specific Far Side comic you are after is to look at the line under the reviewer's name (note this doesn't show on the initial product page in spotlight reviews, you need to click on the link see all reviews and sort by most helpful or latest), anyway under the reviewer's name you will see some orange coloured words This Review if From and then either black words or blue words to the product reviewed which will tell you if it is Gallery 4 or 5.

The initial review of Gallery 4

Gary Larson has created the funniest cartoons in the history of mankind. Unlike other comics you do not need to read them in a series as each individual cartoon tells its own hilarious story in a stand alone fashion. Therefore you do not need to have read the previous volumes to enjoy this edition to its fullest.

Fourth in the series of Far Side collections, the 1994 originally released Gallery 4's cartoons come from the smaller books Wildlife Preserves, Wiener Dog Art and Unnatural Selections. This volume is forwarded by Robin Williams who gives a four paragraph opinion on Larson and his work.

Granted by the 5th gallery there are a number of jokes being recycled and cartoons that appear in the other galleries, you will never find a cartoonist like Larson so just buy it for the laughs and intelligence he portrays with a few crude drawings, couple lines of dialogue, and odd placement of humans and animals in unlikely situations.

As a satirical cartoonist, Gary Larson has no peer. His biting and hilarious insights often require a great deal of thought before you get the point. If you are not familiar with the reference used to create the cartoon, it is unlikely that you will get the point.
For example, on page 42 there is a cartoon showing deer engaged in an excavation project with a mounted cowboy observing them while perched on a hill. The caption is "Where the deer and the antelope work." If you do not know about the song, "Home on the range", then you will not understand the joke. Another example on the same page shows three frogs lying among cattails holding wine bottles. The caption here is "Yeah, I remember Jerry. Good friend of mine ... You know, I never understood a single word he said, but he always had some mighty fine wine." Once again, if you are not familiar with the song "Joy to the World" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, the joke will most likely pass you by.
Gary Larson is a genius, where that quality is manifested in ways that are twisted, yet profound. This book is hilarious.

Mixing great artwork with excellent imagination and humor, Gary Larson's Far Side galleries, including this one, is a stroke of genius. Great writing, too!
