1. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management (Portable Mba Series) This is an excellent book on basic project management, which introduces project manaagement in a reader friendly way. This is more practical book, and not heavily academic. By explaining concepts carefully, it takes the mystery out of the profession of project mangement. It presents a variety of practical techniques for managing projects--from planning project to developing schedules to determining costs and other aspects of project management. Highly recommended.
2. 90 Days to Success as a Project ManagerThis is another excellent book that introduces the project management body of knowledge in a cohesive, concise, and yet comprehensive fashion. Even though the book is compatible with the latest version of the PMBOK Guide, the author presents the material in an original style. Furthermore, the topics are not limited to the boundaries of the PMBOK Guide. For example, the book presents some very useful virtual communication models. Critical points are reinforced through features such as Study Check Points, Success Shots, Notes, and Tips. There is a perfect logical flow throughout the book. Seems like the author follows a famous principle of good technical writing known as the Preacher's xiAom: Tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell them, and then tell them what you told them. I take it as a very good feature of the writing style, and not as repetition. I know that this book have been used as a textbook for introductory project management courses at well reputed universities such as Stanford.

I'm a baby boomer who just passed the PMP exam on the first try. This was one of three books I purchased from Amazon to help me prepare and I consider it more or less indispensable.

The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management (Portable Mba Series) was not only a great aid to my test preparation, but will also be a good general project management resource going forward. The authors have an associated web site where they make available various project management forms templates (none of the other books had this).

I highly recommend this book.

This book starts off by giving you the reasons that project management (PM)came into existence and why it's so important today.

It quickly then goes into the meat of the matter from the Project evaluation all the way to the project close. The book goes into just enough detail for those thinking of taking up PM for the first time. The prose is smooth and the explanations lucid. In fact its a great book to carry on site as the chapters can be read within one hour at m ost and will quickly bring you up to speed on what may have left your memory since the first reading.

Check out the contents in the look inside feature of amazon to find out what is covered as i will not bother to be redundant here.

Additionally I really appreciate the downloadable forms which can be customized to suit your needs.

In conclusion if you are new to PM get it you won't regret it!

As a manager of Project Managers, I look for ways to keep my team informed and using best practices. This book is well organized, has practical examples and easy to follow. I have been giving everyone who joins my group receives a copy for the past 10 years.

I also like that you can just read a chapter or a few pages to refresh yourself on a concept. It isn't a book that you have to start at the beginning in order to get to the point you are after.

I own both the first edition and this improved version and am impressed with the expanded content.

Great book for those who want to begin in project management; it is even a recommended reading before getting into the PMBoK. Also a good main index for professionals who will introduce this subject in a group of students.

As both a practicing & certified Project Management Professional (PMP), who is also a adjunct professor that teaches project management at both the graduate & undergraduate levels, this is one of the most useful project management books that I have used in the classroom. Unlike many of the project management texts that I have used that spend many pages on project management theory, Eric's book gets to the point of how to practically & successfully manage projects. What I like in particular is that he approaches project management from a "How to get it done right" approach. The many fully customizable templates and forms included as part of the purchase price of the book are absolutely invaluable.

Previously I had successfully used the 2nd Edition of Eric's book in the classroom. Given that success, I am planning on using the new edition. Although understanding some of the underlying project management theory is important, many of the books I have used offer an overly theoretical and statistical approach that does not effectively explain the essential 'soft' project management skills well. In my view, Eric addresses project management theory at the right level, while offering a number of exceptionally useful project management ideas and tools.

Lastly, in preparation for an upcoming class, I did a page-by-page scan of the new edition. Lots of truly substantive changes. Unfortunately, in the case of many of the books that I have used in the classroom, the issue of a new edition means little more than a change of the copyright date.
