Editorial Reviews

Review

"I do admit that I wish I had discovered this text years ago, as it is a very concise, educational, and practical study of the mind-body connection, as it applies to the primary care physician's everyday encounters with those suffering from mental illness ... I could go on for pages, as I thoroughly enjoyed this text. This should be required reading for every physician and student of medicine. It now sits in my library and serves as a quick reference for understanding and dealing with the mind-body connection. I encourage you all to read it." Nicholas O. Biasotto, D.O., President, Medical Society of Delaware -- Delaware Medical Journal, April 2009

While a lot of things have shaped the way I practice medicine including mentors in medical school and residency, there are less than 5 books/articles I have read or lectures I have heard that I actively and intentionally try to recall to mind as I see each patient (and family member) through the day and this is one of them. I consider the principles in this book to be so vital to my understanding of patients and building relationships that I find myself using it with challenging patients and situations. It has made me feel much more comfortable with the "difficult patient" and made me realize that what made certain situations difficult is that I lacked tools which I now have. Using these tools has created many "a ha" moments when I suddenly had clear insight into the person sitting in front of me which allowed me to be much more effective in what I was trying to do, allow the patient to be heard and allowed me to enjoy even difficult interactions. Patients desperately want their doctors to listen, this book teaches us how.

This was an easy read but very informative and helpful in regards to interviewing patients. I am currently in an FNP program and the tips in this book will be very useful.

Excellent book with effective methods to implement the intervention technique. I highly recommend this, use their techniques and you will see results without spending an inordinate amount of time with your clients. Definitely recommend. The book is easy to read and understand, well written.
