Book Description

Can you make a resolution to live a healthier and happier life? These days, there’s no shortage of weight-loss programs or nutritional advice — media outlets are constantly releasing ‘late-breaking’ reports about dietary discoveries, many of which contradict previous recommendations. This makes it quite difficult for anyone to know what actions to take.

But if you are middle aged, there’s an additional obstacle: Very little of what we read and hear is specifically geared to providing dietary and nutritional guidance for people age 50 and over. Yet, midlife is a time when natural physiological changes and the cumulative results of longstanding lifestyle habits demand that we rethink how we eat if we are to remain vital.

This eBook from PBS and Next Avenue gathers advice and wisdom from blogs and articles written for nextavenue.org, a Web site designed for those in this new phase of life that we call Adult, Part 2. Next Avenue’s Fiftysomething Diet takes direct aim at the nutritional needs of those in the second stage of adulthood. Each chapter presents dietary suggestions that can maximize physical and cognitive wellness in the face of the normal bodily shifts and increased risk of disease that occur with age.

Whether your goal is to shed pounds, boost energy, beat back dementia or generally maintain good health and a sense of well-being, The Fiftysomething Diet points the way.

1.0 out of 5 stars A mish mash of poorly documented diet advice January 18, 2014
By ClareK
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was wooed into buying this from what looked like an endorsement at the PBS website. The book is a poorly written rehash of unsubstantiated diet advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars I found it insightful and actionable. January 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I purchased all three of Next Avenue's ebooks after seeing a posting on PBS's Facebook page about them. I was pleasantly surprised. If you're looking for a boring 300pg white paper about these topics, don't buy these books. If what you want is current, relevant and well sourced info that can make you life better beginning today, then you've found what you're looking for.

The info in this book is clear, focused and presented in a way that makes it easily actionable. I think the price is fair. Coffee this morning cost me $5...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good information February 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lots of "diet" books discuss theory but never quite tell a person what to do to make good choices about healthy ways to eat. I found this book got right to the point. It gives lists of foods in different categories that a person can take shopping with them. It is simple and clear enough for anyone to understand. I have recommended it as good advise.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple Information Found Online April 20, 2014

I rated this book 3 stars for it's good and simple content but this information is all over the internet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same old same old June 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't find anything revolutionary here. This book simply restates what everyone already knows about staying healthy, and therefore happy, as we age. It is sound advice, clearly presented, and if you need one guidebook for this stage of life, it is fine. However, if you have a shelf full of advice on the issue of healthy aging, don't expect anything new here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you haven't kept abreast of what's going on in the Food industry and no nothing about health and nutrition, it's worth buying. But I've read most of John Robbin's books, The China Study and saw Forks Over Knives, so I understand nutrition. The one bit of information that I now include in my diet is Vegan Enzyme capsules which I now include in my routine.
