This cd is one of a series of film music productions by Chandos. Others include the works of Vaughan Williams, Dmitri Shostakovich, Malcolm Arnold, Nino Rota etc. All are conducted by Rumon Gamba with the BBC Philharmonic. If this disc containing the music of Richard Addinsell is any indication of what to expect from the others, then, indeed, the series may constitute a very fine one. The playing is excellent---clear, dynamic, tuneful, just right (sentimentally speaking) and atmospheric in the usual motion picture soundtrack manner. The recorded sound aids significantly in sustaining the favorable overall impression. The Warsaw Concerto (from "Dangerous Moonlight") is probably the best known piece here, however melodies from a number of the other works provide a very welcome measure of enjoyment. The Suite from "Goodbye Mr. Chips" is particularly lovely and memorable. "Love on the Dole" offers a charming elegance. "The Black Rose" , which starred Tyrone Power, has an open air spirit of exoticism and adventure. The wonderful "Scrooge" music restores the vivid memories associated with Alastair Sim's outstanding and deservedly famous portrayal of the title character. There is a moving tune, which is played in the movie during a meeting between Scrooge, as a young man , and his ill fated sister. It also appears when Scrooge visits his nephew to seek forgiveness and acceptance after he has learned a lesson from the three spirits that he will never forget. Though the Suite runs for fourteen minutes, one still wishes for more...The Overture from "Tom Brown's Schooldays" is both pleasantly playful and nostalgic. (Oh how that violin sometimes brings tears to one's eyes.)..."The Admirable Crichton" , for which Addinsell refused to take credit, displays continental flair...Read more ›

The most valuable piece on this CD is the music from A Christmas Carol, which we are all familiar with, starring Alistair Sim. The theme from Barbara Allen is haunting, and reminds the listener of the role of his long-lost love has in the life of Scrooge, and how he made the wrong choice.

I have wanted the music score from the Allistaire Sims version of "Scrooge - A Christmas Carol" for some time and finally found it here.

I ordered this for the first three tracks - the music score by Addinsell which he composed for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1939). The music is uplifting. There are also extensive 'liner notes' in a booklet in the CD container. I am already familiar with the Warsaw Concerto - another wonderfully evocative piece from that era. I have yet to listen to the other tracks - but highly recommend this CD - if only because finding the music from 'Chips' on a CD is not easy. I can't wait to explore the other tracks.

I was thrilled to discover a cd that included the music used in the 1951 Alastair Sim version of "Scrooge". Sadly, one very important piece of music from the film was not included in the suite. It is the music played when Scrooge shows up at his nephew's home for Christmas. They all dance to a lively tune. That is the music I truly wanted. Overall, the recording quality is excellent and other selections on the cd are enjoyable.

Richard Addinsell has composed for many, many wonderful soundtracks for some great British films. as a lover of film scores, I am very critical. I had not paid much attention to this particcular composer until recently, but I am so pleased that Ive found him. His score for the 50s film, The Black Rose, is particulally BRILLIANT!!!! I urge lovers of film scores to buy and enjoy.

For fans of Addinsell; in this reviewer’s estimation, an excellent transcription and performance by Gamba and the BBC Phil. In particular, track 14 i.e. Scrooge is highly enjoyable. Gamba and the BBC Phil’s rendition and performance of Addinsell’s incorporation of English folksong Barbara Allen in Scrooge is favorably comparable to Newman’s (now out of print) in terms of tone, rendered emotional depth and recreation of the original sound and performance (instrumentation and choir). After listening to both Newman’s and Gamba's versions (Scrooge track) and the other performances, my overall conclusion is the Gamba and the BBC Phil are in fine form on this CD representing Addinsell's work.
