Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Certain needlecraft designers trigger an immediate go-buy recommendation. Omdahl is a new addition to the cadre, joining the likes of her contemporaries Fassett, Epstein, Mably, and others. It’s hard to imagine crochet BK (Before Kristin) because her creative and skillful use of its best qualities—lacelike, intricate stitches and modularization—defines every one of her previous books (e.g., Wrapped in Crochet, 2008; Crochet So Fine, 2010). In her new title, she reexamines edgings—used singly, in multiples, and as stand-alone projects—in terms of their making: top down, bottom up, side to side, and the always welcome miscellaneous. Each of the more than 40 patterns includes a chart, written directions, a color photograph of the finished swatch, and very frequent tips (e.g., the mermaid scales could be used as an overall fabric). Names are picturesque and somewhat descriptive: deco scallops, pinecone, open leaf, and circle coins, for instance. Rarely are all the patterns in this type of reference book appealing, yet from the wonderfully draped Ephesus cowl to the fun-and-funky Petra wrap skirt, every one of the 10 projects is a winner. --Barbara Jacobs

I crochet tons of baby afghans and love the book because I can use the same inside pattern and embelish the edges with beautiful borders.

The instructions are clear and very easy to follow, and the illustrations are great.

As you would expect from a well-known crochet designer like Kristen Omdahl and publisher Interweave Press, THE FINER EDGE: CROCHETED TRIMS, MOTIFS, AND BORDERS is a beautiful book. The full-color photos are gorgeous, and the crochet patterns have both written-out and charted instructions.

Nevertheless, I was a little disappointed, because I expected a collection of many patterns for crocheted edgings. (Can anyone ever have enough patterns for decorative crocheted edgings?) The book does indeed deliver a collection of interesting edging designs, but it is focused on "expanded use of edgings to create entire fabrics, make individual decorative motifs, and produce three-dimensional designs". Thus only about half the book is devoted to an Edgings Reference Library (20 top-down, 8 bottom-up, 14 side-to-side, 12 miscellaneous).

The rest of the book is devoted to Projects (10 in all). Some of the projects are quite innovative: (1) a cowl made of crocheted-together edging strips, (2) a car coat with a collar and edging of vertical stripes worked in horizontal rows, (3) a net top with applied spiraling flower edgings, and (4) a flower crocheted onto a bag made from simple square motifs.

Because of the limited number of actual edging designs, I rate THE FINER EDGE at 4 stars ("I like it" on the official Amazon scale). If you're looking for a collection of crocheted edgings, you might consider these excellent ones: The Complete Book of Crochet Border Designs: Hundreds of Classic & Original Patterns,

Every pattern says which way it is worked (side to side, top to bottom, bottom to top, or some other way), has a diagram (which makes understanding the overall structure much easier), and is worked in actual crochet big enough to see and in varied cool colors as well. The written out instructions are also clear. The projects in the back are not the reason to buy this book as they are not nearly as nice as the edgings presented in the beginning. Only the "Moebus" scarf/shawl even slightly appeals to me, but the edgings themselves are different enough from other books that I consider this an excellent purchase!

I can't get enough books with new and/or different stitch ideas. I was especially taken by the Pompeii Möbius. Presentation is everything and the beautifully illustrated offerings in this book make it a valued addition to my library.

I love Krisin Omdahl's work. Her instructions are clear, the photos are great, with good example projects. The first week I got the book, I solved a "too short" skirt problem with a beautiful edging. Came out great. The ideas and patterns in this book are beautiful and the possibilities are as wide as your imagination. Definitely recommend for the serious crochet enthusiast.

I have already used several patterns from this book to extend the sleeves of some blouses. I would recommend this book to others who want to add a decorative edge to projects,

Lots and lots of pretty and useful crocheted edging with clear bold photos. Not too much info tho on scale (I.e. same trims done in a finer yarn, etc)

I crochet tons of baby afghans and love the book because I can use the same inside pattern and embelish the edges with beautiful borders. Also I love the fact that it is on my Kindle and I don't have to cary a bunch of books with me when I leave home. I always carry my crochet projects with me and having the book on Kindle is wonderful.
