Book Description

April 24, 2012 Bachelor Firemen
The first book in Jennifer Bernard’s Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel series, The Fireman Who Loved Me is sizzling hot and sure to fire up contemporary romance lovers everywhere! Set in a California firehouse where all the fire fighters are gorgeous and single, The Fireman Who Loved Me follows the romantic exploits of Captain Brody of Station 52 who inadvertently becomes the prize at a charity “bachelor auction” and is won by a sweet, meddling old lady who turns him over to her husbandless, local TV news producer granddaughter. A great new voice with a very sexy edge, Jennifer Bernard is like the Kristin Higgins of firemen, and fans of Susan Elizabeth Phillips—and the fireman romances of Jo Davis—will be burning for more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Smith's beautifully crafted love letter to her friend Robert Mapplethorpe functions as a memento mori of a relationship fueled by passion for art and writing. Her elegant eulogy lays bare the chaos and the creativity so embedded in that earlier time and in Mapplethorpe's life and work."--Publishers Weekly, Top Ten Books of the Year

From the Back Cover

Fearless, smoking hot, and single: meet the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel. These firemen might be heroes, but it's their bad luck in love that makes them legendary.

News producer Melissa McGuire and Fire Captain Harry Brody couldn't be more different, though they do have one thing in common: they're both convinced they're perfectly wrong for each other. But when Melissa's matchmaking grandmother wins her a date with Brody at a Bachelor auction . . .

Sparks fly. Passion flares. Heat rises. (You get the picture.)

Add a curse, a conniving nightly news anchor, a stunningly handsome daredevil fireman, a brave little boy, a couple of exes, and one giant fire to the mix, and Melissa and Brody's love may not be the only thing that burns.

More About the Author

Jennifer Bernard is a graduate of Harvard and a former news promo producer. The child of academics, she confounded her family by preferring romance novels to ... well, any other books. She left big city life for true love in Alaska, where she now lives with her husband and stepdaughters. She's no stranger to book success, as she also writes erotic novellas under a naughty secret name only occasionally mentioned at family gatherings. Her first contemporary series, The Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel, is published by Avon Romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Story February 25, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I love contemporary romances, and as far as I am concerned there aren't nearly enough of them out there, so I snatched this one up as soon as I saw it. (Also, I am married to a firefighter, so I got a kick out of the title.) I read the book within a few hours; there's nothing difficult about it and it's not the kind of story you need to put aside for any reason.

I liked Brody and Melissa. They were a good couple with similar outlooks. Unlike with many romances, you got the feeling that this was a couple who could actually make it together for the long haul.

I liked the other guys in the firehouse. Their relationships with each other seemed quite real with the teasing and name-calling.

I liked Melissa's relationship with her family. Her father, in particular, touched me.

BUT...both Melissa and Brody have exes who appear in the book, and both are completely flat, cardboard characters. They are bad, bad, bad, selfish, selfish, selfish people with no redeeming qualities. This is, admittedly, a pet peeve of mine, but it weakens the book overall since it detracts from the characterizations of the others.

Another peeve: the "big misunderstanding." The one that begins about halfway into this book lasts far too long. If it was necessary at all, which I don't really think it was--this could have been a grade-A, five star novella--it should have been kept short.

So..I am ambivalent about this book. Yes, it was a fun, easy read. But there were things that really nagged at me. If you're addicted to contemporaries as I am, you'll probably want to read this one just because there's not all that much else out there in this vein and it *is* a quick, fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and engaging story March 3, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The lead character in this story is Melissa McGuire. I got hooked immediatley when I discovered that Melissa is lured to a charity bachelor auction by her sassy grandmother. When she discovered that her grandma "won" a date with a handsome blue eyed firefighter and was going to back out of the date as she didnt feel well and sent Melissa in her place. What makes this fun is that on the other end the hunky firefighter has doubts about going on a date with an old lady and convinces the boss to show up in his place. Melissa ends up on the "date" with Fire Captain Harry Brody. What I didnt expect was that these two would have sparks and chemestry. Did not see that coming. I liked that the author was able to make this a more enjoyable read and not necessarily where you knew what was going to happen next. We had a self centered new anchor, a recovering alcoholic, a couple of exes, and some foster care issues thrown in the mix to make this a well down book.

The main characters Brody and Melissa. They were awesome. I loved how the author developed them throughout the book.

Grandma (Nelly) - she stole the show. I loved all the intereactions and plot development around her. She tugged at my heart strings.

The one big change I would make is the lack of follow through with the social worker issue/foster care problem. This seemed like a serious issue that kept getting on the back burner by being forgotten. Once was fine, the next 2 or 3 times was a tad annoying.

I am already looking forward to the next book in this series. I wonder who it will be. I think Ryan would be the next logical choice but as I mentioned this book kept me guessing as to what would happen next. So I think Ryan would be to easy of a next in the series.... We shall see!

3.0 out of 5 stars entertaining and easy to read April 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
3.5 stars.

Jennifer Bernard's debut novel The Fireman Who Loved Me is a sweet romance with a dash of spicy lovemaking. A matchmaking Grandma, a sassy heroine and a battalion of sexy firemen are the perfect ingredients for one hot read.

Burned by her former boss and love interest, Melissa McGuire is concentrating on her career not her love life. She reluctantly agrees to go on a date with the bachelor her grandmother bids on at a charity auction. Although he is not her type, Melissa is instantly attracted to the sexy Captain Brody. Thrown together through her job, Melissa and Brody's romance heats up until their pasts threaten their future.

Melissa and Brody are fun yet flawed main characters. Melissa's dysfunctional childhood plays a big role in her personal and professional lives. Her relationship with her father is strained and practically non-existent. She is close to her feisty and lovable Grans and their interactions are absolutely delightful and one of the highlights of the novel. The sexual chemistry between Melissa and Brody leaps off the pages and it is a enjoyable watching their romance build. However, Melissa's self-doubts undermine both her relationship with Brody and her career.

Brody is a commanding presence and his entire crew has a deep respect for their awe-inspiring captain. With a painful divorce in his past, Brody is not interested in a relationship. Although Brody is cool, calm and collected under pressure, he is surprised when Melissa manages to get under his skin. He is an honorable man whose good intentions inadvertently cause problems in his and Melissa's relationship.

The relationship between Brody and Melissa begins as a friendship and slowly becomes romantic. Their lovemaking is smoking hot and quite passionate.
