Book Description

January 15, 2008 4 and up
A favorite Easter picture book is reformatted in a low-priced hardcover edition. At Easter time we think of fresh new grass, baby animals and warm golden sunshine. We think of baskets full of candy and brilliantly colored eggs. But most of all, at Easter time we think of Jesus and all that He did for us.

More About the Author

I'm a full time illustrator and writer. Before beginning my freelance career I worked for a movie production company as production designer and writer of feature films, including Thunder Run, and May Day.

I've written/illustrated twenty-eight children's picture books. My most recent projects are HUMPHREY'S FIRST PALM SUNDAY, ONCE UPON A ROYAL SUPERBABY, and THE LITTLE SHEPHERD'S CHRISTMAS. My art has appeared on everything from book covers to bookmarks. I've done work for DISNEY RAY BRADBURY, SCHOLASTIC, PENGUIN PUTNAM/Henry Winkler, and many others.

For me, writing and art have always been inextricably bound. When I worked in advertising I wrote copy and did design work; in the film industry, I had the opportunity to do both writing and art direction; and now in children's books I am able to write and illustrate. I've found it impossible to write without seeing an illustration and equally impossible to do a painting and not be able to write a story around it. Visualization is the key to both writing and art. Making a character, place, or thing real and believable is my goal in both arts.

I work with public school children and have been amazed at how many children have no idea who Jesus is and why He has anything to do with Easter. Because of this my church is sponsoring a program on Saturday to teach the local children about Easter. I reviewed several books from our local library and online and found this one to be the best as far as explaining Holy Week without being too confusing. The illustrations are wonderful also. I believe this would be a book children will want to hear again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice For the Little Ones April 19, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the Easter books we currently have out for our girls to read. There are many positives about the book, but I do have some criticisms. As far as the favorable aspects of the book are concerned...

1. It begins with the Christmas story.
2. The artwork is excellent.
3. Children of different colors are seen coming to Jesus.
4. Jesus does not look like a white American.
5. Jesus is shown getting righteously angry.
6. Many Holy Week events are part of The First Easter - Palm Sunday, the temple clearing, temple controversies, the Last Supper, the Gethsemane prayer, the second Roman trial before Pilate, the crucifixion, empty-tomb witnesses, and the resurrection appearance to Mary Magadalene.
7. Important words like Magi, prophets, sin, Passover, disciples, priests and temple elders, blood, will, crucified, and tomb are part of the story.
8. Important places and people like Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Golgotha, Garden of Gethsemane, Caiaphas, Pilate, and Mary Magadalene are mentioned.

These are some of the negatives I found with the book...

1. Jesus looks a little feminine in the picture showing children running to Him.
2. There are no Scripture references, and the Scripture is paraphrased.
3. There is no blood shown when Jesus is wearing the crown of thorns.
4. Jesus is not shown on the cross, and three crosses are not next to one another.
5. Jesus' wounds are in the hands when many scholars would say his wrists were actually pierced.

Despite my criticisms, it is a nice book for young children. I would simply supplement the book with a Bible and discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful November 28, 2011
By la chap
Format:Hardcover
I forget how I found my kids this book, but this is a treasure. My five year-old frequently selects it for his bedtime story. The illustrations are stunning, and I love the choice of color in the inside cover (royal purple). I think this adds to the presentation as I read it to my kids, and explain the significance.
This book is such a refreshing contrast to the hastily published "appropriate for Easter" books out there everywhere.
The story is Jesus-centered, beginning on the day of his birth. It is applicable to children, illustrating Jesus' love for them on the pages.
It includes the events of holy week, and I love connecting the Psalm Sunday entrance into Jerusalem by singing "Hosanna" with the kids, just as they do in Sunday School.
I love the deliberate focus on the resurrection. Mary's encounter is highlighted, as is the disciples' meeting of the angel. I usually choke up as I read the line "why do you look for the living among the dead?"
Also, Carol Heyer passionately describes and illustrates the thrill of the moment when Mary realizes the gardener is actually her Lord Jesus. The picture on this page is of Mary's face and Jesus' scarred hand.

I am so appreciative of this book. I purchased two of her Christmas books for my children for Christmas presents and am eager to receive them!
