About the Author

Ben Miller has been researching the history of Cape May for a decade and is the author of the column ""The Way We Were"" in Exit Zero magazine.

More About the Author

Benjamin R. Miller (1975- )

Miller was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, graduating Nazareth High School in Nazareth, PA in 1993. Immediately after high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and attended boot camp in Orlando, FL. Miller was then trained in Naval Intelligence and granted security clearance two levels above Top Secret.

While working overseas with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two (VQ-2), Miller was treated for tuberculosis, endured liver damge from the 6-month tuberculosis treatment regime and sustained a serious knife injury to his right hand that saw him hospitalized. He also suffered a handful of crippling attacks that military doctors were unable to explain. Miller was transported back to America and based on his exemplary record, he was awarded an early Honorable Discharge. It was later determined by a team of doctors that Miller suffered from PTSD and Panic Disorder.

Miller elected to pursue a college degree at Lock Haven University, where he also joined the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communication (later renamed 'Business Communications') and a Minor in Journalism. It would be four more years and a series of personal tragedies, before Miller began his literary career as a columnist with Exit Zero, a weekly magazine based in Cape May, NJ.

His initial writings were primarily historical in nature, though he also penned the occasional feature story and editorial. In 2008, Miller set his sights on a higher goal, when he created 'Donate My Weight' (www.DonateMyWeight.com), a campaign to use weight loss as a means to raise donations for food banks across America. He appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX news segments all over the country, along with a series of radio interviews and appearances on the 10! Show, Good Day Philadelphia and the Rachael Ray Show. Miller wrote pieces about 'Donate My Weight' that appeared in the Morning Call, Express Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Exit Zero, the Quill and Scroll and USA Today.

In July of 2009, Exit Zero Publishing released Miller's first book, The First Resort, a hardcover coffee table book that profiles America's first resort town, Cape May, NJ. The book features 300 full-color pages and details the city's history from 1609 to 2009, accentuated with over 500 pictures. The First Resort has been well received by critics, historians and fans of Cape May from around the world, nearly selling out of its initial printing after only a few months. The Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 'Top 10 Coffee Table Books of 2009'.

Miller had a number of further book projects on the horizon, but due to a worsening of his PTSD, Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia symptoms, he has been forced to prematurely retire from full-time writing.

Ben Miller has surely done his research. This book has everything you would want (and then some) on the history of Cape May. As summer resident of Cape May this book has included numerous facts that I didn't know about as well as many photos from the past, present, and future of CM. I am an employee of the Mall in Cape May, in a shop that sells 'The First Resort,' I've heard nothing but wonderful comments and we can't help but selling out of the book week after week.
Also, the book is not "filled with ads" as someone had commented and for about $30 is a steal for what your getting in return. Ignore the negative comment.

This is by far the best book on Cape May!

I purchased this book in Cape May and was fortunate enough to have it signed by the author. I have never read such a detailed and informative book. Each page is packed with pictures which are very interesting. I was amazed at how far back in time the photos are from. This is way more than a coffee table book. If you are a Cape May fan you must have this book! You will be amazed at some of the history of this fine city that you will read about in The First Resort.

Ben Miller has done a fabulous job creating a memorable keepsake about my hometown, Cape May, N.J. His dedication toward recreating Cape May's history has resulted in a must have book for any one who has fallen in love with Cape May. I have a business in Cape May and am one of the advertisers in the back mainly because I knew Ben would do a fabulous job and I wanted to support him. He certainly did not let me down. As a matter of fact his book surpassed all my expectations. If you love history and Cape May treat yourself to a copy of The First Resort.

I think this is the best book on the history of Cape May I have ever read. I spent the first 18 years of my life going to Cape May for summer vacation, and I never knew the history of the place I called my "second home". I thank the author for teaching me about the place I love and for giving me a new reverence for Cape May.

This book, an incredible value at 29.95, is filled with 300 pages of amazing historic photos and wonderful stories about Cape May's interesting history. This is by far the most comprehensive history ever published about Cape May. If you or a loved one loves Cape May, NJ (and who doesn't), then this is a "Must Own" book. It is a wonderful read, and something that I'll be leaving on my coffee table for years to come. I've already purchased 3 copies as gifts for family and friends.
