The True Fit Recline C650 Convertible Car Seat is the latest addition to the True Fit car seat family, receiving five stars for Ease of Use from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This seat delivers all of the standard features from our original True Fit with several new features. This seat features the standard no-rethread easy-to-adjust harness. The harness is for use up to 65 pounds. Our easy off head rest and easy off pads are standard too. The C650 model features smaller bottom rails and a flip foot on the bottom---flip it forward for rear facing installation and flip it back when you move to the forward facing installation. This seat is fully lined with Expanded Poly Propylene foam and has deep side wings that really surround your child. We have added a center angle indicator in the front of our seat for use when installing in the rear facing position. This new easy to read indicator will help you determine if you have installed your seat correctly. For your infant, it will indicate the Safety Advocate recommended 45-degree angle for installation (without head rest) and as you keep it rear facing to 35 pounds (with the head rest) you can check for the recommended 35-degree angle for installation. We have also moved both side LATCH attachments so they are easy to access when you are installing your seat and easy to secure when you remove the seat from your vehicle.

Why buy the True Fit convertible seat? Did you know that you can use our seat from 5 to 65 pounds and during the entire time of use your child will be secured in a 5-point harness? Most Safety Advocates recommend keeping your child in a harness as long as possible! Advocates also recommend keeping your little one rear facing for as long as possible. We have a removable headrest that really is easy to remove. One finger lifts the release and you are able to pull the head rest off until you need it. As your infant starts to grow, simply add the head rest back on and you are good to go in the rear facing position from 23 to 35 pounds. When your child is ready to watch you drive simply make sure that head rest is in place and turn your seat around. Remember, even in the forward facing position, your child will still be using the 5-point harness. Let's not forget about installation, all of our True Fit models feature built-in lock-offs and LATCH system, for both the rear and forward facing positions. Ever try to adjust or rethread the harness straps on a car seat? Unless you have a few hours to spare, you will really appreciate our no-rethread easy-to-adjust harness system. We have easy to access shoulder belt height adjusters on each side of the seat and they are clearly marked with recommended positions (four) based on whether you are installing in a rear or forward facing position. All of this means you never have to spend time trying to figure out how to correctly rethread or adjust the harness. Does your child ever make a little mess with their animal crackers in the car? The combination of our no-rethread harness and our easy-off padding makes clean up a snap, literally, our pad snaps right off. Simply lift the center flap on the pad, unsnap the sides and clean up is as simple as can be. Once your pad is clean, it snaps back on in seconds hassle free!

True Fit is the only car seat manufacturer with the removable head rest for rear facing installation. By removing the top portion adults in the driver position have more legroom than what is available using competitive convertible car seats. Another huge feature is the external adjustment of the harness. Virtually all other manufacturers require you to rethread their harness in order to make adjustments. Utilizing an external adjustment simplifies the process and assures you of proper installation. The external measurements for our seat are comparable to all other major competitors. The big difference lies in the internal dimensions where we are wider and deeper allowing the child to better fit in the seat ergonomically for a longer life cycle. Another big issue is cushioning where the child sits as our seats offer more padding in all areas of contact. We now offer external mounted latch (C650 and C670 models) making for easy installation for those using this method of installation. It may be trivial but we are the only manufacturer whose cup holders are level when the seat is installed in the car. All other brands incorporating cup holders are level only in the store.

After reading strong reviews of the The First years True Fit, I took a chance on the 2nd version, the Recline, one of my best online purchases ever. My 16-month son, who was sittling in a rear-facing Graco baby carrier, has been itching (more like crying) to get into a forward facing seat. After much prodding from my wife, I researched all the typical web sites ([...], consumer reports, IIHS) and was intrigued with the much cheaper True Fit as compared to the Britax Marathon. Best purchase I've made on Amazon and about $100+ cheaper than a Britax.

First, the seat is BIG. I installed it in my Mazda 3 (small car, but live and park in Chicago) and it fit no problem. I did do what everyone said about the original True Fit, READ THE DIRECTIONS front to ocver. At first, I was thinking that this seat is way too complicated, but after about 20 minutes of finally knowing all parts, I got it installed. After pulling the anchors and the front latch, this seat is not moving anywhere. I put my son in it and I think he was amazed at seeing things going forward at first....but then fell asleep like a light. The existing padding (without the supplemental padding) and the size of the seat made me realize how much safer I felt with my child in a big seat. I would recommend that if your kid is greater than 25lbs, I would pull off the extra padding and buy a seat saver (indentation) to prevent seat damage. Hope this review helps.

I ordered this because I have a Honda Fit which is very small and I have a 11 month old that I want to keep rear facing as long as possible. I tried a friend's True Fit in my car and it worked fine without the headrest rear-facing in the center seat position, so I ordered one. Well, once I got it and read the instructions, I realized you can only use the seat without the headrest up to something like 22lbs and then you have to put it back on in order to remain rearfacing up to 35 lbs. Without the headreast it isn't rated for a child any larger than the infant carrier I was using. Basically that made it useless to me. Also, with the seat properly installed rear-facing, I couldn't access the snaps to re-attach the front of the cover, and I also couldn't access the strap adjustment lever very well either. I would have been very inconvenient because I like to loosen the straps when I pull my baby out of the seat and re-adjust them every time.

The seat did have a lot of good features though. I would highly recommend it if you have the space in your vehicle. I loved the fabric, the no-rethread harness adjustment feature, and the overall feeling of quality.

So, as I said, if you have the space in your vehicle, this seat is great...but don't count on the removable headrest if you need the space and you have a toddler. I ended up with the newest generation Britax (Marathon 70) and I love it for my tiny car.

Overall, a good seat (high safety ratings) EXCEPT when used in a mid-size sedan or smaller in the rear facing position.
Also, if this is your child's second seat because they outgrew their child carrier/car seat (e.g., Chicco 30), then do NOT pay the extra money for the "Recline" feature... get the base model "First Years True Fit". See my reasoning below.

STRENGTHS
+ Great safety reviews from independent organizations -- that is a reason to buy it.
+ Allows you to adjust shoulder straps height through the seat back within SECONDS... EXTREMELY easy and fast.
+ Roomy - Lots of space/width (just like adults, kids like some space).

WEAKNESSES
- Roomy - Lots of space/width (not good in a midsize sedan or smaller)
- Nearly impossible or impossible (depending on vehicle) to loosen and tighten shoulder straps before and after placing child in seat in the rear facing position. (not good in a midsize sedan or smaller)
The strap is plenty long, but the problem is that strap exits the child seat below the front "lip" of the seat. At this location, the metal strap release lever and strap are not accessible because they are wedge against (and binds against) the vehicle's seat back. In order to use the child seat, you then have to place your other hand behind the child seat back to pull the strap first to make slack/take-up slack and then use your other hand like your supposed to tighten/loosen the strap between the child's legs.
In our minivan with captains chairs, this is less of a problem because I can put the captains chairback in a nearly fully reclined position which make the vehicle car seat bind less on the child seat strap. However, when we tried it in the Grand Am sedan, the child seat is impossible to use....
- "Recline" feature only good if you have an infant who has NOT outgrown their child carrier/car seat (e.g., Chicco 30)... that is the, child is a newborn up to 30in or 30 lbs. WHY? Most vehicle rear seats are "sculpted" which means the recline feature (per manual, good for only 5 degrees change) is "lost" filling the sculpted cushion. Besides, according to the instruction manual, you can use towels or pool noodles to raise the seat to the level needed. We loved our Chicco 30 until our son outgrew it (> 30"), at this point, the "First Years True Fit" recline feature and level indicator is not used (worthless). Read more ›

Prior to tonight I had bought the True Fit as a convertible car seat for my one year old. He is now 15 months old and loves the carseat. Adjusting the straps and taking it apart to clean is easy and simple. It fits well in my Ford Freestyle and the latch system works great. Originally I bought the car seat because a friend recommended the True Fit to me and because of the excellent safety ratings.

I loved the car seat before because of it's ease and accessibility to install into my car. My kids and I were hit by a hit and run driver tonight on the driver's side. My 15 month old son was sitting behind me as we were hit on that side of the car. I and both of my older children were all hurt and taken to a nearby hospital even though we all had seatbelts on, but my 15 month old son did NOT HAVE A SCRATCH on him! The car seat kept him safe! I am purchasing another one right now, that is how satisfied I am with the True Fit.

I am tearing up just thinking about how badly he could have been hurt, because my car is totaled. The driver hit us to hard that my axle snapped in half and my tire bent completely underneath my car. I cannot thank The First Years enough for designing a safe, comfortable, and wonderful car seat that quite possibly saved my son's life. Thank You Thank You a million times over again!
