I purchased this unit to replace an air purifier/fan that I have been using in my son's room as white noise. I'm not impressed with the sound quality of the white noise options of this sound machine. Compared to a fan, the sounds are much higher pitched and seemed to be more stimulating than calming.

The music feature is nice as is the option to hook up an mp3 player.

FYI - The timer is optional. It will run continuously which is nice. (I couldn't find this is the product description anywhere.)

We bought this unit because we were searching for something that didn't shut off after 30 minutes or an hour. The product description doesn't tell you, this unit will stay on until you turn it off, unless you press the timer button, which is actually why we bought it and is awesome!! We live in a townhouse, and there are sudden noises that constantly woke our sleeping bundle of joy...car doors slamming or honking, barking dogs, loud knocks at the door, kids playing out front, etc. We use the white noise to "cover" up those sounds, and since there are like six sound levels, you can pick what you need most. Our babe is now to the point where we just turn it on when he first goes to sleep and then it shuts off an hour later, and he is used to the noises outside, but initially, this thing was a blessing. The night light is also great, because the blue light is pretty bright, and allows the babe to take comfort in seeing his surroundings and fall back asleep without a jolting "white" light that fully wakes him up. Honestly, we don't use any of the other features, iPod dock, mozart songs, or other noises, but I would have paid twice as much for the continuous white noise feature.

My wife and I have been searching for crib CD players and have experienced difficulty finding one with consistent reviews. Our 6 month old son naps significantly longer with music (like many children) and this product is a really nice alternative to your standard CD player. For one, the price is very reasonable for the quality. The nightlight is a soft blue ambient like light that is very soothing. The music sounds really good and the song selection is standard (you would hear them in a Barnes and Noble) but that is actually what I like about it. Here are my gripes with CD players:

1. You have to buy them ;-)
2. They can become damaged or can easily be lost
3. They make a lot of noise and could actually keep the baby awake.
4. If they get scratched they skip, and it can become rather annoying quickly.

Just four quick reasons why I think that this was the right purchase for my baby. You have the option to use batteries for on the go listening, or utilize the a/c for more perminent settings. It is small and very light weight for easy portability. Bring it in the bathroom for bath time easily so music can be enjoyed during (what some kids may be) a stressfull time, lol.

All in all, great product and I would recommend to parents out there that like the flexibility of having the ability to create a lengthy playlist instead of being limited to the 60+ minutes that can fit on a CD. It also has a nice timer setting so you can have it shut off automatically after one hour. Nice product "The First Years"!! Might I make a recommendation for the future product? Give the player the capability of strapping it to a crib ;-)
