Book Description

Subterranean Press is proud to present Robert McCammon's first contemporary novel in nearly two decades, a tale of the hunt and unlikely survival, of the life and soul, set against a supernatural backbeat. Robert McCammon, author of the popular Matthew Corbett historical thrillers (Speaks the Nightbird, Mister Slaughter), now gives us something new and completely unexpected: The Five, a contemporary novel as vivid, timely, and compelling as anything he has written to date.

The Five tells the story of an eponymous rock band struggling to survive on the margins of the music business. As they move through the American Southwest on what might be their final tour together, the band members come to the attention of a damaged Iraq war veteran, and their lives are changed forever.

The narrative that follows is a riveting account of violence, terror, and pursuit set against a credible, immensely detailed rock and roll backdrop. It is also a moving meditation on loyalty and friendship, on the nature and importance of families those we are born into and those we create for ourselves and on the redemptive power of the creative spirit. Written with wit, elegance, and passionate conviction, The Five lays claim to new imaginative territory, and reaffirms McCammon's position as one of the finest, most unpredictable storytellers of our time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny thing June 9, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Funny thing is, I didn't expect to like this book. I have read everything Mr. McCammon has published and consider him one of the very best. It was the subject matter that didn't really interest me. As a 41 year old retired cop, things like poetry, music and the ability to put thoughts to music, typically held no interest for me. Having said that I'm really glad that my loyalty to my favorites has paid off again. This book taught me, entertained me and had great effect on my opinions on people who create for a living. I loved this story and have already recomended it to friends. I hope this man continues to write for a long, long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book! May 18, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is by far the best book I have read in years. Something about the way McCammon writes his characters draws me in from the first page. By the third chapter I was weeping for the losses this band were going through. Then McCammon ratchets up the thrills and suspense and it doesn't let go until the end.
I put this up there with Boys Life which is perhaps my favorite novel ever.
It was truly worth the wait. I'm only sad I didn't read it slower to relish it more. I envy readers who still have the journey ahead of them.
Get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of the King June 1, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Robert McCammon has always been one of the most original and powerful voices in horror and fantastic fiction. His novel, SWAN SONG, rivals THE STAND, for post-apocalyptic majesty (and has a lot more heart); and books like MYSTERY WALK and THEY THIRST show that he has the chops for visceral and compelling horror storytelling.

Now we have him back with THE FIVE. Frightening, psychologically complex, weird and deftly plotted, THE FIVE, is a solid return by one of the true Kings of Horror. Brilliant and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
I feel McCammon got a solid read on the depiction of a band on the road. The villian of the piece was belivable and the tale did not cross too far over into the supernatural, being... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars This is no Boy`s Life
Despite many good ratings, I never felt the magic of Boys Life. It lacks the warmth, the heart of Boys Life. IMHO, Boys Life is one of the best books ever written. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Robert McCammon
This is a very good book but does not rise to the standard of Swan Song or the Matthew Corbett Series. The book takes a long time to get going but races to a fantastic finale. Read more
